It has been two years since the Women's Health Initiative Estrogen plus Progestin (WHI) arm of this large trial was stopped early because it caused harm. The WHI showed the opposite of what was expected--Estrogen (Premarin) plus Progestin (Provera) caused heart disease and breast cancer as well as blood clots and strokes. WHI results show that estrogen does not improve the quality of life for women. WHI estrogen plus progestin results are "evidence-based." We now have evidence-based proof that "HRT" is harmful to women.But people are still taking Hormone Replacement Therapy and are concerned about estrogen deficiency. Why?"Little has changed because the fundamental, negative ideas about women and about menopause have not changed. Universal menopausal hormone therapy ... (is) based on a cultural belief that women are inferior and need fixing. For over twenty years I have been saying that menopause is a natural part of women's life cycle, the low estrogen levels after menopause are healthy and not abnormal. This made me unpopular--I have been labeled as "way-out" or worse. Therefore the WHI results for me were a vindication", says Jerilynn C. Prior BA, MD, FRCPC Professor of Endocrinology, Scientific Director, Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research, University of British Columbia.And, she is correct. Two years after the WHI study little has changed. If you go to your doctor today and request HRT most will prescribe it for you. Despite the fact that The Women's Health Initiative, the largest controlled trial of ovarian hormone therapy ever performed, provided the strongest proof that Medicine (which has been strongly influenced by the Pharmaceutical Industry) causes harm for women.The website for the WHI study said, "Women should stop their study drugs immediately." Following that order led to hot flushes in many women who were on hormone therapy because their body had adjusted to that higher level of estrogen. Women who heard the news of the study in the media also often stopped their therapy abruptly. That led to severe hot flushes in hundreds of thousands of women and in virtually all women who had previously experienced them."Because it is well known that rapid withdrawal from estrogen causes night sweats and hot flushes, all physicians should have been ready with advice for women wanting to stop estrogen." Says Dr. Prior.For Lack of helpful information, and because the resulting symptoms of night sweats / hot flushes were so miserable, many women, in desperation, reluctantly restarted unwanted HRT treatment.It seems logical to now say that the WHI results require re-thinking of the concepts on which menopausal "replacement" and "estrogen deficiency" were based. The primary assumption that all women needed estrogen because they were deficient still needs to be addressed. I like what Dr. Susan Love said, "If estrogen deficiency is a disease, all men have it!" Destroying the concept of estrogen deficiency will be hard and may take many years to achieve.In the mean time where does that leave you and I?Estrogen Dominance not estrogen deficiency, according to Dr. John Lee is at the crux of our dilemma and bringing our hormones back into balance will be the key to hormonal health.STEP 1. I am a busy mom! There is always more things to do in one day that I can think to accomplish ? taxiing children here and there, keeping up with the housework and my business, taking time for my family and myself, and providing good nutritious meals for my family. All of these things are important to me! To keep them in balance is sometimes a challenge!We all like to feel healthy, have lots of energy, and be able to accomplish the tasks and desires of each day. However, in todays fast pace world, we become so busy that we often lean towards fast foods, packaged conveniences, and we often forget to exercise! There?s usually no extra time to take care of Mom when there?s so much on our plates as it is.After my life changing experience years ago, when my health was failing and I turned to whole foods and reversed my health conditions, I realized one very important thing. In order for me to enjoy my family, be a good mom and wife, and accomplish my mission in life, I needed to enjoy good health! It was necessary for me to change and to get my life and my health in order. I had to place a high priority on good healthy changes in my diet, exercise and daily routine, and as I did, it helped my family to improve in those areas as well.Take a moment to evaluate yourself and see how important you are to YOU. If you aren?t important enough to YOU, it may be lessoning your importance to others as well. Rate yourself 1 to 10: 1 being least importance, 10 being greatest importance.1) Have I taken time to set goals for myself?
2) Do I take time each day to plan my schedule?
3) Do I take time each day to meditate, pray, and think?
4) Do I take time out each day for myself to read, learn, or grow in some way?
5) How important is my health to me?
6) Do I place a great importance on healthy eating to maintain and improve my health?
7) Do I take time to plan and carry out good healthy meals for my family?
8) Do I have a fitness program that I follow daily or at least 4 times each week?
9) Am I over weight or experiencing unnecessary health problems because of my neglect or lack of time for myself?
10) Do I allow my daily tasks, schedule, and work to take precedence over some of things I really should or need to be doing?If you can answer 6 and above to most of these questions, then you are most likely on the right track. If most of your answers are under 5, then you may be neglecting yourself in many ways. Again, how important are you to YOU? And then, how important is your health to YOU?Now you may be saying about right now, ?Well it?s easier said than done. If you only knew my schedule, my work, and my ?.!? But we all have the same amount of hours in the day. And its not that we should always put our own needs above everyone else?s, but we do need to take time out for ourselves. Women?s health issues are important as we carry a big load each day, and if our needs are not being met and we are not fulfilling our body?s needs, then how will we be able to help our family and others fulfill their needs?Life is busy! But don?t be too busy to take time out to be the best YOU that you can be! Your health is important, your education is important, your life is important to you as well as those who love you. My older brother, almost 60 now, is showing the same pattern of thinning hair. But, unlike my father, he has a lot more treatment options at his disposal.Causes for hair loss can run the gamut from genetics, medical treatments like chemotherapy, skin eczema or allergies, excessive stress, poor nutrition, hormonal changes like menopause and "andropause", under-active thyroid, immune disorders to trichotillomania, a psychological disorder in which people are compelled to pull out their hair. teksty study in England has also shown a direct connection between smoking and hair loss. It also showed that smokers were 4 times more likely to have gray hair than non-smokers.Some conditions can be treated medically through drugs like minoxidil and corticosteroids. Taking evening primrose oil (1000mg 3 times a day) will prevent hair loss that is caused by excess flaking and shedding of skin on the scalp.b) Flaxseed Oil (14 g a day) provides substances called lignans which may help fight cancer, bacteria, viruses and fungi. Zinc must be taken with its companion Copper (2 mg a day) in order to maintain proper mineral balance in the body. Copper also contains melanin, the pigment that colors hair and skin and can help reverse or delay premature graying. On and on it goes. This is the mark of someone who doesn?t know what their workout routine will be that day.Shoot, they may have not decided which body parts to work. And so they look around trying to decide what exercises to do, based on which equipment is available or how sore their muscles are, or even how tired they feel.Basically, it?s like grocery shopping on an empty stomach, without a menu plan, maybe even without a list, feeling like you are starving. When you get home you may have blown your entire grocery budget on the wrong foods, even though those foods looked good at the time of purchase.Planning your workouts for the week ahead is the best way to increase your productivity during your gym visits. This planning time gives you a perspective on your fitness goals that just running off to your workout cannot.Finding the best time for this planning, in an already overly busy schedule, can be challenging. However, it is definitely worth the effort. Within a few short weeks you will be able to plan an entire week of workouts in about 15 minutes. Since most people run the rat race Monday ? Friday and use the weekends for play and downtime, I will assume that workouts are done Monday ? Friday as well. (With an occasional Saturday if you choose to skip the Friday workouts.)This presents Sunday as the best day for you to jot down what you plan to do for the following week. Here are a few tips to help you get the most from your planning session and thus, the most from your workouts, without having to spend hours at the gym.Know what time demands lay ahead for the next week. If you normally hit the gym at 5:45 but Susie has gymnastics at 5:30 then you know you have to juggle the activities. If Susie is ok with you not watching practice, this may be a great time to squeeze in a workout. However, because you probably need to pick her up by 6:30 your workout time is at a premium. Know this going in and planning for it helps you accomplish your fitness goals while taking care of the family as well.Know what body parts you are working on which days, and why. Haphazardly combining muscle groups will actually stunt your progress. For example, my personal clients perform their upper leg workouts as a standalone session. This gives total focus on one of the biggest groupings of muscles in the body. Your body can respond by dedicating all the available resources on the legs.But also know that your chest and back can be worked effectively together. Shoulder and arms make a nice combination. By knowing this, and planning your workouts accordingly, you will skyrocket your success!How much cardio you do and when is important. Spacing your resistance training to allow for recovery can open up days that can be devoted to cardio alone. Because you are planning for this you can enter the gym knowing what you are doing with the confidence of knowing why. This avoids ?feeling guilty? because you worked on one or two body parts and not all muscles. If you have recurrent pain and swelling behind your big toe or in your ear, you may have gout.Gout occurs when uric acid crystals precipitate out from your joint fluid to cause pain, swelling and heat. The only way to prove that a hot painful joint is caused by gout is for the doctor to remove joint fluid and to see crystals in it under the microscope. Attacks of gout can be precipitated by being overweight, having a tumor, exercising for a long period of time, taking in large amounts of fructose in special fruit drinks, drinking alcohol, particularly beer, eating large amounts of purine-containing foods or taking aspirin, diuretics or large doses of the vitamin, niacin.Doctors usually treat painful attacks of gout with aspirin or non steroidal pain medications, such as indomethacin. After the pain is gone, doctors usually prescribe allopurinol to reduce the amount of uric acid manufactured by cells, and probenecid or sulfinpyrazone to draw uric acid out through the kidneys. Probenecid should not be prescribed to people whose livers make too much uric acid because it will cause kidney stones. Your doctor should ask you to provide a 24-hour urine specimen and check it for total uric acid. If levels are high, you should take only allopurinol and not probenecid.Doctors usually do not recommend low purine diets to lower uric acid because drugs are so much more effective. No studies have isolated bacteria or viruses often enough to blame them. Certain cells called osteoblasts constantly bring calcium into bones to make them stronger and osteoclasts take calcium from bones. Exercise increases the rate that osteoblasts strengthen bones. Inactivity slows osteoblastic activity to weaken bones. So any exercise that places force on a bone will strengthen that bone.The person most likely to suffer from osteoporosis has pale skin, is very thin and drinks a lot of alcohol. Pale people often do not get enough sunlight to meet their needs for the bone-strengthening vitamin D; skinny people often miss essential nutrients necessary for bone health; and heavy drinking inhibits new bone from forming (Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, December, 2005). Most sweat glands produce sweat that contains no fat, but the sweat glands around the breasts, genitals and armpits produce sweat that contains fat. Most people prevent body odor by washing these areas frequently to reduce the number of bacteria on the skin's surface.The vast majority of people can prevent body odor by 1)bathing frequently; 2)changing underwear and socks daily, because underclothes retain skin debris that bacteria break down to cause odors; 3)using deodorants that contain low levels of bacteria-killing metals such as aluminum, zinc or zirconium; and 4)using powder under the armpits and groin to keep the skin dry, which prevents bacteria from growing. Bacteria grow rapidly on wet skin.If you do all of these things and still have an odor, something is wrong. The most common cause of unusual body odor is a skin infection. An ammonia odor is caused by infection with Helicobacter, the bacteria that causes stomach ulcers, or by eating too much protein. Ask your doctor to draw a blood test for helicobacter. If it is positive, you can be cured with antibiotics. If it is negative, you may need to eat less meat, fish, chicken and dairy products.
