***Family Dentists***

Family dentists treat dental problems of all members in the family, regardless of their age. Different techniques are employed depending on the nature of the problem and the age of the individual.teksty family dentist plays a significant role in detecting orthodontic requirements in children. It is estimated that about 45% to 75% of American population could benefit from orthodontic treatment. Some parents recognize the need and initiate the appropriate treatment very early in their children. Family dentists generally recommend an orthodontic check-up for the children before the age of 7 and, if deemed necessary, begin the course of treatment when the children are aged between 9 and 14, or refer them to a specialized orthodontist.Many family dentists also provide cosmetic dental services such as cleaning and removing stains from the teeth, altering the shape or length of the teeth, bridging gaps and polishing and restoring the worn teeth. They routinely fill up troubling dental cavities.It is necessary for all the members of the family to visit the dentist at least once every six months. However, such an exercise is bound to be expensive. Considering this, some large and small scale employers provide a dental plan as part of their employee?s benefit scheme. This could be a dental insurance plan where the expenses incurred due to a dental treatment are taken care of by a funding agency, which may or may not be the organization with which the employee is associated.Some dentists also provide attractive discounts on the various dental services offered. This serves not only to recruit a large number of patients to the dental clinic, but also ensures that they come with their ?family problems?.Dentists provides detailed information on Dentists, Cosmetic Dentists, Software For Dentists, Family Dentists and more. ***Body Composition And Weight Loss: They Are Related!***

The world today has more obese and overweight people than any other time in history. The reasons are simple too much bad foods and not enough exercise and weight training. However, with so much focus being placed on health and wellness, people are changing their lifestyle, thus obtaining quality health. The one aspect of losing weight that most people agree they need to understand better is body composition, and how it relates to weight loss.First, it is important to understand that “obesity” is not just a condition involving too much weight, but also a disease that poses multiple health risks such as certain cancers, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. In addition to these risks, obesity has a negative impact on physical performance, which could be as simple as walking up a flight of stairs or heading to the mailbox. Because obesity is such a powerful disease, it needs to be taken seriously.To get started in combating obesity, a person should educate himself or herself on how to achieve health. One problem is that most people are not even aware of the fat-to-muscle ratio, which is crucial to losing the right type of weight. You see, if a person is not combining nutrition, cardio exercise, and weight training, they are not benefiting their body at all and could even be doing themselves harm. These three things together create synergy needed to lose weight while maintaining muscle.For instance, a person that eats a good, balanced diet and goes to the gym but only works out to lose weight will in fact lose weight, but unfortunately, they will lose the wrong kind of weight. The weight this individual is dropping is not the fat they need to lose but muscle. When this happens, the body’s metabolism and muscles are inefficient.For a person eating right and doing only cardio exercises, what you would have is a skinny fat person. Sure, they might lose the weight but again, it will be muscle. Therefore, the fat-to-muscle ratio plummets, giving that individual a soft, undefined appearance. Additionally, because the fat is not lost, all of the health risks such as diabetes 2, heart attack, some cancers, and other serious diseases still exist.Therefore, it is crucial that you use a combination of good nutrition with the cardio and weight training to lose the fat and not the muscle. Keep in mind that you do not have to overdo the weight training but you do need to incorporate it into your daily regimen. Weight training along with the cardio exercise is what shapes and sculpts the muscles, bringing the fat-to-muscle to a healthy ratio.Keep in mind that if you had 10 people undergoing a body composition assessment, all of them obese, you would discover not only a laundry list as to why the person is obese, but also realize that the same weight loss and exercise program would not work for every person. As mentioned, most people become obese simply because they start into bad eating habits and stop exercising. However, another reason for obesity relates to health. Some people have inherited or developed health issues that cause them to be overweight, such as thyroid problems. In connection with that, a person can experience significant weight gain because of medications being taken for health issues.Therefore, creating a one-for-all weight loss or exercise program simply would not work. Through a body composition assessment, all of these factors will come out into the open so the appropriate programs can be developed. This is important in that professionals want obese or overweight people to enjoy eating and exercising, as well as benefit from it. However, if an obese or overweight person were not on the right type of program based on their specific body composition, more harm than good could be done.The key to losing weight, the right type of weight, and living a healthy lifestyle is to remember that a poor fat-to-muscle ratio will have a negative impact on both. Sadly, approximately 45% of the population is overweight, with many of them being at the level of obesity. When the body has high composition levels, not only is there great risk of serious disease but also injury to knees, ankles, and the back. Additionally, being obese has a significant impact on a person’s mental health, often throwing them into a tailspin of depression.The best thing you can do for yourself is to check your body’s composition level so you know exactly the amount of fat being carried. In reaching the right fat-to-muscle ratio, it is imperative that you know the body does need some fat to function. For one thing, an appropriate level of fat helps to cushion internal organs and nerve conduction. However, when the fat is over a healthy ratio, trouble begins.In addition to reaching for your blood pressure cuff or diabetes testing kit, you need to measure your body’s composition on a regular basis with the use of a caliper, which can be purchased at a minimal cost. Remember, by understanding your body composition, what is happening inside your body both good and bad, you can take control to lose the excess fat. Armed with this newfound information, you will no longer have to guess where you are with your fat-to-muscle ratio, you will know. We invite you to learn even more about body composition and take advantage of the invaluable tools provided at http: / / www.comptracker.com.Fitness Consultant Anthony Ellis has helped thousands of individuals lose fat and build more muscle. ***Your Metabolism and Fat Loss***

If you know someone that has been trying to lose weight and get into shape, you have probably heard words such as, "I just eat one meal a day to lose weight" or "I'm afraid if I eat, I'll gain weight" but sadly, this misnomer is why so many people are in the "battle of the bulge". People all over the world still believe that eating breakfast, or even three meals a day will cause them to gain weight. In truth, as long as they are eating the right types of foods and exercising, then three normal meals or six small meals a day will actually work better with their metabolism than eating the wrong quantities or not eating often enough.With more than half of Americans over the age of 20 now being considered "overweight", now more than ever, we need to understand how metabolism works in relation to losing weight. Why risk having a heart attack, a stroke, developing cancer, or diabetes when all you have to do is make a few minor changes and live a healthy life? First, a person's metabolic rate is determined by the number and size of respiring cells that compromise the body's tissue, and the intensity of the metabolism in these cells. These two factors combined are what makeup the physiological foundation of the amount of energy (calories) in which a body uses.Keep in mind that energy cannot be created or destroyed, just changed. As we know, potential energy comes from the foods we eat. When talking about weight loss, there are three components of balanced energy, which include calorie intake, calories stored, and calories expended. The way it works is that if the amount of calories taken in equals the amount of calories being expended (burned), then there is balance and the body's weight is stable.On the other hand, if the balance becomes positive, caused by more food being eaten than is burned, energy is destroyed or in better terms, stored as body fat. It is important to remember that you can be eating a diet considered low-fat and still gain weight. The reason is that most dietary fat is stored while the body is burning carbohydrates and proteins for energy. The problem is the when a person gains weight, the increased level of fat becomes stored energy until the calorie balance is negative. For that to happen, the amount of calories burned needs to exceed the number of calories being consumed, no matter what the macronutrient content.Metabolism is the rate at which the body uses energy to support the basic functions essential to sustain life. This metabolism is comprised of three parts, which include physical activity (20%), Thermic Effect of Food, also called TEF (10%), and Resting Metabolism Rate or REM (70%). Physical activity is the amount of energy your body burns up during normal, daily activities to include housework, recreation, work, exercise, and so on. Obviously, someone that is physically active will burn more energy than a sedentary person will. TEF accounts for the energy used in digesting and absorbing nutrients, which would vary depending on the meal's composition. When a person overeats, TEF is increased because more food must be digested. Here is where metabolism becomes very interesting and what causes so much confusion.One pound is equal to 3,500 calories, so let us say a person consumes 3,500 more calories than normal. That individual would not gain one pound because the TED is accounted for but if 3,500 calories were cut trying to lose weight, then TEF decreases since there would be fewer nutrients to process. The result is that with energy expenditure would decrease, meaning that the individual would lose less than one pound in weight. In other words, by cutting out too much food, TEF cannot work as it was designed to do. Now keep in mind that you cannot go around eating a bunch of junk food. After all, the calories you do consume need to be healthy foods but what this does mean is that when you do not eat, you are actually working against your body in fighting weight gain,
not the other way around.Finally, the RMR refers to the number of calories the body needs to run its essential functions, as well as chemical reactions while in a rested state. This aspect of metabolism accounts for the greatest number of calories burned every day. What happens is that if lean weight should be lost because of increased protein metabolism, then RMR decreases. Typically, you would see this happen when a person goes on a very strict diet. In this situation, the body is forced into a negative nitrogen balance, which means a greater amount of protein is lost than what is replaced because of less protein / energy intake. When this imbalance occurs, there is a gradual loss of lean weight, which then lowers RMR.What happens many times is that dieters will limit the amount of lean weight loss with intense exercise for the muscles to develop a need to maintain more protein. When this happens, the body is forced to use more energy from stored fats. If you want to put your metabolism to work for you, some simple steps can be taken:* By adding a few extra pounds of lean muscle, the metabolic rate can be increased by up to 200% each day
* Remember that lean weight can burn as much as 20 times more calories than fat weight
* Regular exercise is one of the best ways to boost metabolism
* By eating smaller meals and more often, you can boost your metabolism rateWhile you need to eat healthy foods, studies prove that what matters most is how much of a person's body weight is attributed to fat. Remember, excess fat is what links to major health problems. Therefore, it is important that you maintain a healthy weight but more crucial that you monitor the fat-to-muscle ratio.For example, a woman standing 5'5" might weigh only 125 pounds but have a 27% body fat ratio, which is not good. This individual worked hard to diet, while staying involved with aerobics. However, much of what she lost was not fat, but muscle. Even though this weight would be considered ideal for her height, her body fat to muscle ratio is too high.An excellent way to optimize your fat-to-muscle ratio is by getting involved with weight training in addition to the nutrition and cardio. As you will see with the tools provided at www.comptracker.com, you can analyze the thickness of the subcutaneous fat at various areas of the body. The benefit is that you know exactly what your ratios are so you can achieve a healthy fat-to-muscle ratio as well as body weight.Remember, you are in control and need to make the decision to do something good for yourself. Therefore, now is the time to take that control and fight to live a lean and healthy lifestyle.Fitness Consultant Anthony Ellis has helped thousands of individuals lose fat and build more muscle. ***Applied Software Project Management Book Review***

It?s not often that a software project management book comes along that is practical, easy to read and stacked full of ready to use process scripts. Andrew Stellman and Jennifer Greene have done just that with recent book Applied Software Project Management.There are too many books about software project management or software engineering which are dry, overly complex and boring, but this book is not one of them. It was a joy to read because their style of writing is clear without being simplistic and the authors describe things in just the right amount of detail. It seems they understand their audience and set out to write in an extremely helpful and practical way. They have certainly achieved this.Part one of the book covers tools and techniques that can be applied on projects. Project planning, estimation, scheduling, reviews, requirements, design and programming and testing each have their own chapter. Part two is about using project management effectively and has chapters on understanding change, management and leadership, managing an outsourcing project and process improvement.A clear thread throughout the book is a description of the typical problems software project teams face ? inadequate requirements, managing changes, lack of quality assurance at each stage in a project, endless testing and bug-fixing cycles, tensions and misunderstandings between the software engineers and business users. None of these problems are technical in nature, but are organisational and managerial. Stellman & Greene offer practical advice to solve these problems based upon their experience on similar projects.Stellman & Greene certainly appear to know a lot about problems that face software teams. As early as the introduction they describe the need to overcome chronic problems and this theme is continued throughout the book. For each problem, there is always at least one proposed solution. For example, they describe a common scenario whereby senior managers do not trust the estimates of the technical team, somehow believing that the technical team are deliberately over-estimating in order to give themselves some slack time. Their proposed solution is to involve these managers in the estimation process so they can see the estimates being made in a transparent and systematic fashion. They then go on to describe in detail how to run a Wideband Delphi estimation session and provide examples of templates and documents that can be used during such sessions. They also provide a valuable process script for teams to follow.Subsequent chapters cover planning, scheduling, reviews, requirements, design and testing. Whilst most of these chapters cover each topic in reasonable detail, the section on design is lacking in detail and provides no description about what kind of design deliverables might be produced nor any detailed description of what these design deliverables might contain. This is in contrast to the requirements chapter which contains process scripts for requirements elicitation and analysis as well as a detailed description of use cases and software requirements specifications documents.Another nice aspect to the book is the checklists that appear after dealing with one of the main project management or software engineering topics. Checklists are important quality assurance techniques that the authors rightly point out should be used throughout software projects as a way of catching errors early. For example, if a checklist applied to the software requirements specifications catches the fact that a critical requirement is missing or ambiguous, then the error can be corrected during the analysis stage. The authors explain that by catching and fixing errors early, the cost is small compared with the cost of fixing errors found later in a project. Their emphasis on quality assurance techniques being applied throughout the project with examples of checklists to apply is therefore very practical and useful.The authors might want to reconsider some of the examples they use. They describe the process of refactoring code in order to make it more maintainable and use an example of some Java code which they gradually refactor over several iterations. At the end of this process they say why refactoring would be applicable in situations where code is spaghetti-like. This is fine, except they use an example of very un-spaghetti-like Java code to refactor. By doing this it looks to me that they fall into a common programmers trap of code beautification where programmers spend time from the schedule iteratively improving code that works just fine in order to write the ?perfect? code, class or object. I?ve seen this happen on projects where there simply wasn?t the time in the schedule to allow this, and it certainly didn?t bring any additional business benefits to the stakeholders. However this is a minor gripe.I would have liked to have seen more pages devoted to risk management. Time and again, not managing risks is cited as a reason why projects fail. The authors do describe risk management in a cursory way, yet the book would benefit from a better description of how and why risk management should be done throughout the project, not just in the early stages of project planning.One thing I thought the book lacked was a detailed look at iterative methods. The implicit assumption throughout is that the software project should follow the waterfall method. I would disagree. There have been some important alternatives to the waterfall method which have been developed over the last 20 years most notably those based upon iterative approaches. The main downfall with the waterfall approach is it?s assumption that everything about requirements is known at the beginning of a project.Iterative approaches on the other hand assume that requirements will change during the project either because users gain a better understanding of what they need, or because of changes to the business environment. Based upon this assumption, iterative methods are designed to better manage this changing environment. With waterfall approaches, changes in requirements often require the project to revisit earlier stages with a corresponding increase in costs and effort. The authors spend barely a page on the Rational Unified Process (RUP) and the authors should look more closely into how their practical advice and processes might be used on alternative iterative approaches to the waterfall approach.Finally, I think the book tried to be too broad by appealing to three different groups of people. Firstly, part one is aimed at those involved in a software team (project managers, analysts, programmers and testers). Part two is aimed at consultants hired to improve project management practices and project managers who need to manage software outsourcing projects. The book would have been better had it focused solely on those involved in the software team.The penultimate chapter dealing with managing an outsourcing project is dealt with in a cursory way almost as if the authors felt they needed to mention it because outsourcing is such a business priority these days. The final chapter dealing with process improvement is also too short to deal effectively with such a large topic. Separate books dealing solely with these issues would have been more appropriate.Not withstanding these points, this book is an excellent guide for those people involved in software projects, both project managers and technical team members alike. They will find much they can apply directly on their own projects.I would recommend this book to anyone who works on a software development team because the book has so much practical advice to help people improve their capability to deliver quality software. Come to think of it, I would also recommend it to senior managers of companies who have a negative view of their own software development teams. Perhaps then senior managers might understand why committing resources to process improvement is one of the best investments they can make.Simon Buehring is a project manager, consultant and trainer and has extensive experience within the IT industry in the UK and in Asia. ***Celebrate God's Love with Christian Books***

Reading Christian books, listing to Christian music, and partaking in other contemporary Christian entertainment can be a source of spiritual renewal and great joy. Christian entertainment can also present a wonderful opportunity to fellowship with other Christians in an environment infused with the spirit and love of God.

You can participate in the joyful celebration of God's work through man by starting a Christian book club, a Bible study group, or hosting a "listening" party for the latest contemporary Christian music.

To launch a book club, decide upon the date and time of the first meeting, then post a notice on the bulletin board at your church, or make an announcement in your church's newsletter or bulletin. Try and recruit book club members from diverse age groups and backgrounds. Having differing views will add interest to later book club discussions. Ask each book club member to bring the titles of two suggested books to the first meeting.

At your first meeting, decide upon a regular day and time for future meetings. The maximum time between meetings should be one month, although many book clubs meet every two weeks. Also discuss who will lead the book club discussions. Some clubs have a single leader for all books, while others choose to have the person who selected the book lead that particular book's discussion. You may also wish to decide whether refreshments will be served and, if so, who is responsible for providing snacks and beverages.

The final - and most fun - step is deciding which book to read first. Take a vote, make a list of the top three choices, and read the books in that order. Book club members should commit to reading the book prior to the next meeting, and the discussion leader should commit to developing a list of study guide questions or points of discussion. If themes in the book correspond to passages in the Bible, the discussion leader should be prepared to guide book club members to those passages.

Each of the book club members should then purchase the book that has been chosen. The Fisher of Men online bookstore offers deep discounts on Christian books, music, software, Bibles, videos, and gifts.

Whether your book club chooses a Christian novel or a non-fiction book, such as "The Purpose-Driven Life," you can have a lively discussion of Christian principles in an environment of fellowship and community.

According a recent study, about half of Americans will buy at least one Christian book this year. The uptick in the sales of Christian titles has led secular online and brick-and-mortar bookstores to carry unprecedented numbers of Christian books. However, instead of shopping at secular bookstores, many Christians are choosing to support online bookstores owned and operated by other Christians. Common thought is that Christians should monetarily support the ministries of other Christians who are spreading God's word through the sale of bibles, as well as through the sale of Christian books, videos, software, music, and audio books.Chris Robertson is an author of Majon International, one of the worlds MOST popular internet marketing companies on the web.

***Indian Apparel Industry 2006***

At the beginning of 2005, the Indian apparel Industry was staring at an immediate future where there would not be any more preferential treatment accorded to any country and the forces of the free market would decide where the business goes.Today, at the beginning of 2006, all the Exporters in India are expanding capacities and investing in Technology and related solutions to be at par with their counterparts elsewhere in the world.The Indian market never looked so bullish as it does today, February 2006. This was reflected in the overwhelming response to the recently concluded Exhibition in January 2006, at the NSIC Ground in Okhla, New Delhi, which was at the center of the action with a majority of the Exporters having set up their factories within 5 km radius of the venue. The exhibition covered about 22,000 Sq Mtr of space and attracted over 30,000 business visitors.During the exhibition a lot of visitors showed an overwhelming interest in OptiTex software packages, especially the 3D draping solution and the specially developed Indian version of its software ? in Hindi Language.During the show a special seminar was also organized by one of the leading apparel Magazines ? Apparel Online. The focus this time, was on showcasing the speed and the accuracy with which a CAD can be used to make the first patterns or base-sized patterns on the computer screen itself. This negates the need for the time consuming and often inaccurate process of digitizing or scanning the manually made patterns, before moving on to grading, as well as arriving at consumption.The audience of the show consisted of technocrats from the Industry, as well as the professors and the final year students of Fashion technology from some of the leading educational Institutes in India. Mr. Saar Machtinger ? Managing Director of India Operations and Mr. Gurdeep Singh ? Manager Application support and Q.A. made the presentation. All the participating CAD Companies were presented a Spec sheet by the organizers and were asked to demonstrate their respective solutions and create the patterns for the same in front of the Audience explaining each step as they went along.The Icing on the cake was the Final prototype. Using OptiTex 3D Runway Designer, the patterns were stitched together virtually in the software itself. The fabric used was chiffon and georgette and the garments were dresses which had a lot of frills and gathers. Dresses are predominantly tricky garments to put together, specially when we are dealing with high twist fabrics like georgette?s and chiffons cut on the bias. The audience was shown how we can cut down the time taken for developing the first prototype Right First Time. (RFT) and correct all the fitting problems on the fly.The result was a perfectly balanced physical garment stitched together on its first attempt. The same garment was then put on the models on whose body measurements they were initially developed. The similarity was there for everybody to see.The exact physical Prototype was exactly as the virtual garment developed in OptiTex 3D Runway Designer.Shalini Gupta is a Sr. Admin & HR Executive for OptiTex? ***Billing Woes For Telcos***

The rapid rise in the telecom industry over the last few years has been an event cheered by many. Today, Indian market is the second largest growing market in the world. And considering the vastly increasing population coupled with increasing economic prosperity, the telecom companies have nothing to fret about. Yet, there are certain chains that are shackling the growth in the telecom. While many companies have paid due emphasis to coverage technology, installing expensive equipment all across for better coverage, they are yet to pay proper attention to their back-end, mostly importantly the billing systems.Quite many telecom companies still have in place archaic billing systems, these software applications were bought off-the-shelf and are complex beyond imagination. Not are they slow on processing or what is better known as 'turn around' time, but are also not scalable to the ever-changing needs of the company. Hence, there are still a lot of services (related to billing) that many operators are unable to provide.In such a scenario, Swastik Infotech Pte Ltd. has launched one of the most revolutionary telecom billing system in the marketplace. Christened as e-Biller, this system promises to put an end to all the discrepancies that arise out of the traditional billing systems. The biggest breakthrough of e-Biller over other such systems is the ease that it offers to the companies to plug in new services without any hassles.This innovative billing system has been designed keeping in mind the present needs and the future requirements of the telecom companies. It is scalable and can be easily configured to suit the changing requirements. It is also easily compatible with latest technologies like ASP.Net (Active server pages) and works efficiently in Dot Net platform.e-Biller is a robust system that has been rigorously tested for any sort of inconsistencies. Busy entrepreneurs cannot be at their desk twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. Wouldn?t it be great if you could have your calls routed to your mobile phone, or find out who has called you first without having to wade through a large amount of voice mail messages when you get back to the office?Until recently the costs of buying a phone system that provides the above facilities and more, was and still is astronomical. Now companies have an alternative.Newly developed software packages are providing businesses with a cost effective solution. ***New Technology Enables You to Watch Satellite TV On Your PC or Laptop at the Click of a Mouse***

Here's what the big satellite and cable TV providers don't want you to know...Rapidly advancing technology has done it again.There was a time in the not too distant past when watching thousands of satellite TV channels on your PC was unheard of. But because of the very rapid advances in technology that have become commonplace today, we have been given the ability to do just that.A couple of the very attractive benefits this new software provides, is that it only requires one simple download, a click of your mouse and "BAM", you're up and running. Watching thousands of international satellite TV channels in seconds. And all with a small one-time payment, so there are no monthly user fees involved as there are with cable or satellite TV services.Also, with most of the old satellite TV to PC methods, you were required to install new hardware in the form of a card that would then use the PC?s infrastructure to decode satellite signals and ultimately allow users to enjoy free-to-air digital television and radio programs.At times it was even necessary to acquire additional computer hardware, such as a sound card, a spare USB slot, a CD Rom drive and possibly other components. This new instantly downloadable software cropping up all over the Internet, has made the additional hardware requirements a thing of the past.All you need is an internet connection. Of course the faster your internet speed, the better picture you will get. But, it even works with a 56k connection. (A Broadband connection will deliver superior audio and video quality).It gives the average computer user instant access to thousands of entertainment channels from around the world and from various genres and categories. These entertainment channels range from live television channels to music videos and from movies to sports.But, be forewarned. As with any new software technology found on the Internet today, there are scams and sub-par, poorly performing Satellite TV to PC software programs all over the place. So be careful what you purchase.Some complaints I've run into concerning certain brands of this software, range from there being only a few channels to watch to "pathetic picture quality". And from no full screen display to no customer support. Believe it or not, some even had links to other sites asking for more money for premium channels!So, if you're looking to make this fantastic new technology one of your entertainment options, do a little homework first. You'll be glad you did.For more information and my own 5 star recommendation on Satellite TV to PC software go to: http: / / www.msp77.com / pctv.htmlFor more information on home and business telecommunications, VOIP, home business opportunities, home loans, auto loans, insurance, and websites. ***Telecom Expense Management Important When Adopting a VoIP Wyst unimarter UniMarter
***Telecom Expense Management Important When Adopting a VoIP Wystem***

Voice over IP (VoIP) technology provides major benefits in both cost reduction and flexibility for mobile employees. But as is the case with any technology, different rules apply to how VoIP telephony is used and managed.Collecting VoIP call detail records is a challenge, because the data differs from that generated by standard PBX calls. However, most companies want the ability to search call detail regardless of the technology that is used.Capturing call detail records, both local and long distance, is important because it can be used for usage verification, billing reconciliation, network management and to monitor telephone usage to determine volume of phone usage, as well as abuse of your company's telephone system. CDR's are an asset in managing long distance telephone costs and aid in the planning for future telecommunications needs.Telecommunications costs can also be easily controlled with CDR analysis by enabling businesses to:* review all CDR's for accuracy* verify costs and usage* resolve discrepancies with vendors* disconnect unused service* terminate leases on unused equipment* deter or detect toll fraud of long distance services* negotiate the most cost-effective call routingVoIP systems typically do not provide the same level of standardized call detail essential to manage, report, and charge back for those services. Even when it is possible to capture some VoIP data, companies are finding that it is complex and difficult to normalize before incorporating the information for analysis.For the best results, choose a call accounting software system that offers full call accounting and billing for Cisco's CallManager telephony systems and other contemporary telephone systems.Since call detail records, like those used with MegaCall, provide a reliable method of safely transferring information to call accounting or telemanagement systems, call record buffers have long been broadly accepted as the preferred storage device as a safeguard against cases of delayed call collection or communication failure.The right call accounting software should captures CallManager data from the server as it rates the calls. The data is and accessible via the reporting system, featuring hundreds of reporting options.Author, Karen Ritz, VP Business Development for TelSoft Solutions, writes on the business benefits of call accounting and call detail record technology. ***To VoIP or Not VoIP - Have VoIP Will Travel***

VoIP is an interesting concept. Lets see - we can make calls pc to pc or phone to pc for free or at a minimal cost. Vontage, Skype, and a host of other carriers are making it simplier and cheaper to impliment with less pain and more gain. So lets make the move, why wait?1. What about our phone system that we have already purchased and invested money in?2. How do we integrate exsisting software and technolgy with VoIP?3. Security issues? Network bandwidth? etc. etc.There are so many questions, but the risk is minimal.Why?Since VoIP transfers information over the network it is easier to integrate with other applications that are based on the network. Plus its cheaper to make phone calls.How?Cisco and Avaya have installed hundreds if not thousands of systems in 2005 and industry experts expect huge growth over the next 6 years. So there are many experts on VoIP already, consulting firms, individuals etc, whom can be hired to help you implement VoIP. It is no longer a mystery, the man behind the curtain has been exposed.The greatest advantage to a small business when converting to VoIP may not be just the price but all the applications that they can pile onto their network for 1 / 4 of the price: voice recording, crm, even your phone applications can be easily integrated with your voice stream that is produced by incoming calls.Bruce Kaskey is a founder of OrecX, has 20 years experience in the software and technology sectors. http: / / www.orecx.com

***Certify This*** Within the scope of my career, the advent unimarter UniMarter
***Certify This***

Within the scope of my career, the advent of technical certifications is possibly the worst thing that ever came down the pike. I have already written some material on this subject, but this practice has caused me so much anguish, I wanted to add more fuel to the fire. If one is willing to overlook the fact that certification testing was originally introduced by software and hardware vendors as a means to produce additional streams of income, there are other issues that make this practice even more distasteful.One analogy would be to imagine that someone was interested in hiring you to build a house. For purposes of making the story interesting, let us say you happen to be a master builder. Before you build the house for the customer, you must satisfy their confidence in your credentials by proving your skills before you are allowed to start work. You have agreed to take a test that was put together by other builders. On the day of the test, you have a general idea what the test will be about, and with your knowledge of house building, you decide passing the examination will not be much trouble for you.When you arrive on the testing site, you are ushered into a room where you find a pile of materials. You are then told you will be required to construct a home using only the information you have in your head, and you are not allowed to refer to specifications, plans, tools or references associated with building the type of home the authors had in mind when they created the test. In addition, you will also have to know where each nail, screw, bolt, and fastener is recommended to go, and what angle is optimal for holding the structure together. You are allowed to make a few mistakes, but if the structure you build does not resemble the model intended, you will not pass the test. Also, you will have to complete the project within a predetermined amount of time, roughly equivalent to what the test creators determined as reasonable for kind of house you are assigned to build.Of course, on the first try, you fail to complete the task successfully, but being a master builder, you take mental note of the various materials you saw while you were in the room. Your customer is willing to give you another try at passing the test, so you take what you can remember about the first crack at the assignment, and spend some time researching building plans before the next test date. You discover a set of plans that contains the same materials you remember from the test, and memorize as much as you can from the specifications you dug up in your research.On the second try, you go right to the task, but discover there are now some slightly different materials included in the pile that were not there the first time, and decide the plans you studied were perhaps not the correct model for your project. You have failed again.Using all the knowledge you gathered from the first two attempts, you are expected to take the test one more time. Your research before the test shows two slightly different models are possible from the materials you have memorized from your tests, and depending on the presence of a specific kind of guttering, you will be building one type of model or the other. On the third try at the test, you manage to struggle through completing the structure, and successfully complete the test with a passing grade, despite some errors you made in the design.Feeling very good about yourself, you are satisfied that your credentials for building houses have been satisfactorily verified. Just before your customers agree to hire you for building their home, they suddenly have some real questions associated with their particular job. They decide you must also be equally qualified in how to build boats, automobiles, telescopes, and small aircraft as well. After all, building is building isn?t it? They ask you if you would be willing to pay for the tests to prove your acuity for building the other items associated with their dream home, and if not they will just have to go on looking for a master builder who can satisfy all their requirements.At this point in the negotiation, you smile, wish your potential customer luck, and push away from the table. Though certain aspects of this tale may be slightly exaggerated, welcome to the world of current technology expectations. The situation is enough to make you want to turn away from further interest in the industry, and ask those who participate in these practices to ?certify this.?Director of Software Concepts

***The Options for Digital Photo Recovery***

Imagine this: after forcing the kids to stop countless times to pose for the perfect picture, you come home to find that the priceless memories you thought you had conserved are gone. Without a trace it seems you have lost your digital photos for good. Maybe you accidentally deleted or formatted the card; maybe the card was pulled out when the camera was still on? Or the camera was turned off during a write process?But all may not be lost quite yet. Is it true that recovery is still possible when we think that the photos files are gone for eternity?Experts suggest that there are different ways to recover digital images that we believe we have lost. A lot depends on how you lost the image, of course. For instance, if you just put it in your recycle bin, click on the ?restore? or ?undelete? button there, and your image is retrieved (easy enough!). This is the most common mistakes that individuals make and many can save a trip to the file recovery technician simply by checking the recycle bin.All image recoveries are not as simple as this, of course. There are instances when data corruption occurs, and therefore your files are inaccessible. For the more complex recoveries, you can seek out good software that is created specifically for this purpose. Alternately, you can take the help of a good service that will assist you in the process of recovery and restoration.A good software or service should be able to recover lost files such as photos, audio, video, PDF's, and Office Files. It should be able to assist you with data that was stored within hard drives as well as removable media used in digital cameras, PDA's and other storage devices. Images (JPEG, EXIF, TIFF, PNG, GIF, and BMP), RAW Image files (Canon CRW, Nikon NEF, and Kodak DCR), audio / video clips, Office Files, and PDFs are some of the files that can be recovered with the use of relevant software.Different services and software packages use differing methods to recover lost files, but if you?re not technically minded, the details aren?t important. What is important is that the solution you choose has a good reputation and is competitively priced. The bottom line is, if you have lost digital photo files, there is no need to despair ? look into ordering the proper software or service, and you can usually recover your lost images and files, so you can enjoy them for years to come!Susan Kinley recommends Media Recover for digital photo recovery software and services.

***Backup Software- Don't Buy It!*** Computer Backup- Forget unimarter UniMarter
***Backup Software- Don't Buy It!***

Computer Backup- Forget About It!Backup Software is for the birds! Computer Backup is too hard, too much trouble and a pain in the butt. Let?s just forget about it.Backup Software is touted as the savior of your computer?s critical business and personal files. They claim that all computer hard drives (where our files are stored) eventually will have a 100% failure rate. They try to tell us that the failure of our hard drives is just a matter of WHEN, not IF.Do your backups they shout!Poppycock!BACKUP SOFTWARE- LET?S GET REALYou and I know the real story. The real story is that new computers are so well made that they almost never fail, right?Therefore, we don?t need to worry about buying backup software and setting up a computer backup system, do we? It would just be a waste time-- for sure!After all we know that all the press about hard drive failures, natural disasters and terrorist attacks is just a conspiracy by the backup software companies to get us to buy their products.Personally I never had a hard drive failure (that I recall). If my computer stops working for whatever reason, that?s life.Therefore, I ignore these software backup companies that try to push their backup software products on the unsuspecting public even though they make data and file restorations easy. I don?t give them the time of day.Therefore as you see, I don?t need backup software, do you? Of course not.BACKUP SOFTWARE- STARTING OVER WITHOUT IT IS EASYIn the unlikely event that I got a virus or a bunch of spyware on my computers I?ll just bite the bullet and move on. After all, if I lost all my data to a virus, then so what? Who needs backup software?Heck, I?d just buy a new computer and begin again and I?d still wouldn?t need backup software because it?s just too much hassle.If ALL my business data was lost due to a hard drive crash or virus corruption then I?d just start my business over. No big deal. It?s not that hard, right? Using backup software is just a pain.BACKUP SOFTWARE FOOLISHNESSSo by now we?re all agreed that using backup software for computer backup is just for the foolish, right? Right.Who would want to use backup software that automatically and easily backs up EVERYTHING on your computer hard drive to a DVD Rewriteable disk or USB external hard drive? That would mean you could easily recover from any computer disaster. That makes too much sense and is far too logical.They claim that backup software is a virtual computer insurance policy against fire, flood, theft, earthquake, hurricanes, tornados and terrorist attacks.Balderdash!Ridiculous.Hey, the businesses who survived Hurricane Katrina didn?t need backup software did they? OK, OK I admit a lot of businesses without backup software and off site backup lost EVERYTHING and now they cannot recover their data and reconstitute their business. But that?s life. Now these businesses and their employees can now move on to something new. How exciting!Look, life without backup software is just so much more interesting.By the way, did I tell you how much I enjoy playing Russian Roulette?Did I neglect to mention my brief stay (it was really was only a few days) at the mental hospital? Ahh, that?s ancient history. Let?s get back to the present.BACKUP SOFTWARE- THE PRESENT DAYWant to hear something silly? My friend Ben down in New Orleans owned an insurance company. It made a very good living for him and his family. He didn?t believe in backup software either. All his computers were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.Ben just laughed and said, ?No problem, this disaster gives me the chance to write the Great American Novel that I?ve always dreamed of writing?.What about his 10 employees and his thousands of customers he was asked? Ben said, ?Heck, things always work out for the best don?t they??What about the income from the business that supported his family he was asked? Ben said, ?Oh, FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) told me they would take care of us and not to worry.?See, Ben is all set and is none the worse for wear even though he didn?t have backup software.BACKUP SOFTWARE LESSONSSo boys and girls what have we learned about this backup software thing?* If we don?t have backup software, so what, it just makes life after a hard drive crash more interesting and fun.* After a natural disaster that destroys your computers, FEMA will make it OK.* All the hubbub about backup software is just a bunch of advertising hype to sell product.* Just because you like to play Russian Roulette, you aren?t really crazy.FINALLY- BACKUP SOFTWARE FOLLYIESI know another guy, Carl Jordan, who is crazier than I am. Carl and the rest of the loonies at Tweak All Consultants (www.tweakspeed.com) actually believe backup software can save your bacon.In my own strange way I try to be fair and balanced. Therefore
if you disagree with me check out Carl?s review of backup software at Backup SoftwareNow, where?s my medication? My meds really smooth me out. They also help me forget about rational things like computer backup and backup software.Jack Back has been in the computer business since 1983 as an IT executive and working computer consultant company owner. ***Back It Up With Backup*** It's happened to so many of us unimarter UniMarter
***Back It Up With Backup***

It's happened to so many of us at one time or another in our technologically obsessed lives. We process important information in the computer. We've been so engrossed for hours, that we pretty much lose track of everything else. And just when you are almost done, something major happens, and you will regret it for the rest of your life.An unexpected power outage. The blue screen of death. And you realize as you bang your head on the wall, that you didn't save. Isn't that sad.Okay. So maybe you were careful enough to save every so often just so that you don't lose your important information. Heck, most programs now have the new-and-improved autosave function, just work away at your desk, and the computer will do the rest, saving your work automatically every few minutes or so.So your resting easy on your chair that whirls about and gives you a few occasional bouts of headaches and nausea.So you saved. Is that it? Don't you know that shortcircuited, faulty wiring will zap all your precious data in a spark? Don't you know that unscrupulous hackers and prowlers will try anything they can to rip off important information from you? So what do you do?Well, folks, the key word here is backup, and no, we're not talking just backup. We're talking about maximum-security backup. Hey, information is precious. You don't see those leather-bound encyclopedia volumes coming cheap now do you.Your information could be worth millions of dollars. Or even if it's just your very own personal information, and even if nobody wanted it anyways, it's still priceless to you, and that's what matters. It is always a monumental loss if you lose something to the ill incidents of technology.So what do you do to protect your important, precious files? Backup, and how! Backup several different copies in different places. Print it out, burn it on a compact disc, store it on several different hard drives, flash drives, your ipod, wherever.You can never have too many backup copies of your mom's famously delicious top secret chocolate chip cookie recipe. Of course, keep in mind that as you update your original files, you should update your backup files as well, not forgetting the backup media used also.I mean, you may have stored tons of backup copies on tape magnet, but I think it's safe to say that we're well out of the era of low-tech storage media. It's time to update your backup copies before they get phased out altogether and you will have no way of restoring them.Of course you actually need to keep your backup safe too. You can't just leave them exposed to the elements and untrustworthy people. Store the cds and drives as required: keep out of sunlight and high temperatures; as the manual reads. Keep it somewhere where you know you will find it.Don't play with it too much. Store in a cool dry place. And if you are the kind who is not messing around with data at all, you may already know the high price at which you value your very important information.Therefore, take all the necessary precautions. Don't just take backup, keep it under lock and key! Encrypt like crazy. Toss in several different levels of maximum security.Update your software regularly. Just keep following these things and you will be successful with your backups and you won't have problems retrieving your information again.James Monahan is the owner and Senior Editor of

***Data Recovery First Aid: 3 Tips To Increase Your Chances Of Success***

Let's get to the important part first - if you've just lost your data, skip past this introduction and go directly to our first tip, so you can start your rescue operation. If not, a few minutes spent now might help you a lot in the future. Pay special attention to our third tip.I always thought of myself as a reliable guy with reliable data. I never deleted my files accidentally, I made regular backups and had a power supply for my computer to protect me against surges and outages. However last year I experienced two cases of data loss where I needed to use recovery software. The first was a dead hard drive that'd hardly served a year. Subsequently, I accidentally deleted a large project file that was too big for the Recycle Bin. Happily I've got all my data back, thanks to good advice and a little preparation.These handy tips will help you stay confident in the face of data loss, no matter how it occurs.Tip #1: Use your system as little as possible until you recover all of your lost files. The more activity taking place on your hard disk, the greater the chance that some of your lost data might be written over.- Don?t copy any files to the disk containing your lost data;
- Avoid browsing the web, because your web browser saves cache files on the disk;
- Don?t launch any unnecessary programs, because they can also use your disk;
- Don?t restart your computer.Tip #2: Before you go further, take steps to free up some space on the disk containing your lost files. The more free space your system has, the less chance of overwriting any lost files with new ones. You can do one or more of the following things.- Delete old files that you don?t need anymore (you can also move them to another source, like a USB flash drive, instead of deleting);
- Empty your Recycle Bin - making sure that you haven?t put any important files in there by mistake;
- Empty your browser cache. For Internet Explorer, click on the "Tools" menu, then select "Internet Options". Then, on the "General" tab, click the "Delete Files..." button.Tip #3: To install any software after data damage increases the risk of your data being overwritten, so if you haven?t had any data problems yet, consider installing a data recovery program just in case. Prevention is always better than cure, and a recovery program is good insurance for your data. However, if you don?t yet have a recovery program, find one and - if possible - avoid installing it to the disk where your lost files are located.Most recovery programs work fairly similarly. You need to select the disk where the lost files are located, let the program analyze the content of the disk - this can take a while - and then select the file you want to recover. Then, provide a location where you want to save that file. You should try to avoid recovering files to the same disk. You could use another hard drive, a network or removable media like a floppy disk or USB flash drive.After you recover your files, check that they are correct. If you?ve recovered applications, check that they still run, or if you?ve recovered documents, check that your words are still there. Even the best recovery software can?t guarantee 100% results. If some parts of your files were overwritten - meaning that other data was saved to their location on your disk - after recovery they might contain invalid information. Depending on the type of file involved, partially recovered files like this can be mended by special utilities.http: / / www.softwaretalks.com / first-aid /

***Hey Folks We Need Backup Here - Quickly*** You know that unimarter UniMarter
***Hey Folks We Need Backup Here - Quickly***

You know that you should back your data up. But you still don't because you don't know what to get. Here is the overview of four budget backup solutions that I've personally used and can vouch for.Acronis True Image 8.0 (Acronis)Acronis True Image allows you to create an exact disk image for complete system backup and disk cloning providing the most comprehensive data protection. The disk backup file contains the exact copy of a hard disk, including all the computer data, operating system, and programs. After a system crash you can restore the entire system or simply replace lost files and folders from your disk backup, so you don't need to reinstall Windows.
Acronis True Image 8.0 is quite speedy, creating an image of a 46 gig partition in approximately 8 minutes with little compression. Restoring a complete image can be a lot longer than creating one, but with the built in Rescue Media Builder, its as easy as booting from that CD, telling it where the image is, and what partition to restore it to. You can wander off for dinner or TV and reboot your computer to the image you have saved, ready to go in roughly 30 minutes for an 80 gig drive. The time to save and restore images is hard to estimate here because larger partitions and more compression takes longer then a smaller partition and no compression.Genie Backup Manager Professional (Genie Soft)Genie Backup Manager Professional is a very easy to use yet powerful and flexible software that can backup and restore files, documents, emails, settings, programs and more to virtually any local or remote device including internal and external hard disks, FTP locations, across network, CD / DVD discs, removable media, memory sticks, and tapes. GBM Pro is perfect for users of all computer comfort levels. Novice users will find it easy to create their first backup job in matter of minutes after installing the software, thanks to its intuitive wizard-based user interface, while advanced users will appreciate the software's extended flexibility and features such as preserving NTFS Alternative Data Streams, Email notification, Self executable backup sets, and scripting capabilities (GRunScript and GenieScript).HandyBackup (Novosoft)HandyBackup is so easy, you might actually find yourself backing data up. HandyBackup is designed for an automatic backup of your critical data virtually to any type of storage media including CD-RW devices and remote FTP servers. You can use HandyBackup to make a reserve copy of any valuable data on your system. Special addons are provided to facilitate the backup of MS Outlook, system registry and ICQ files. Restoring is as easy as clicking a button, but you can also use a number of advanced options. The program can be also used to synchronize files between two computers on a network.HandyBackup is designed for MS Windows 9x / NT / 2000 / ME / XP. Strong file encryption and multi-choice zip compression on the fly, as well as many other useful features, will protect your valuable data. All backup activities are recorded in a log file. Detailed online help is available, which is always nice.Backup4All (Softland)The software performs all four fundamental backup types: full backup, differential backup, incremental backup and mirror backup. Using the wizard you can easily set up any backup configuration you wish. You can define powerful file filters and schedule your backups any way you want. Once a backup is performed, you can see what files have been changed since the last backup using the explorer-like tree view or you can read the statistics about the next backup execution. You can use the context menu from the tree to run standard actions associated with the file type. I now use Backup4all to do my day-to-day backup, and I recommend it for those who want a more automated solution. It uses its own file catalog to keep track of what's been backed up and when. That's the only completely reliable way to do it -- you can sometimes miss files with other methods.Another safety feature - all files and subfolders are included unless you expressly exclude them (by unchecking). This means that if new files or subfolders are added to a folder, the next backup will pick them up as well. Not all backup programs work this way. Once in a while you may not want to back up a file that has been added to a folder, and if you forget to exclude it, it will be backed up anyway. ***Do I Really Need To Backup?***

Okay, computers a machine, right? Okay, maybe not yours. You
have this special relationship, but that a subject for
another article. Machines break. Software gets fouled up.
People make errors. These things happen, and for those
reasons alone, you need to back up all your critical data,
redundantly, in a couple of different locations.You can do this using the tools your system provides, or a
utility you buy for that purpose, but however you do it, do
it! Some more things that can go wrong include disks that
turn bad and erase sections of your files, power failures or
surges, the aforementioned human error (one of the most
frequent causes of data loss!) overheating, water or your
beverage of choice, magnetic issues and last but certainly
most popular, computer viruses.How is all this accomplished, you ask? There are many ways
to backup your data these days, from DVD's to CDR's to ZIP
drives, to portable hard drives, as well as offsite internet
backups. All have their pros and cons, but the cold hard
facts are that it's becoming increasingly easier to back up
your critical data.Don't let that lull you into a false sense of security
regarding your sensitive data. Either do it now, and
frequently, or start preparing an epitaph for your lost
files!Keith Thompson is the webmaster at Data Recovery
Service, offering the latest and most affordable http: / / www.data-recovery.giftsforbiz.com,

***The Seven Golden Rules Of Data Backups***

Backups of company data are carried out for two main reasons. The first is to cater for those times when a document is inadvertently deleted or damaged and you wish to recover the original document; the second is as part of a disaster recovery plan in case something catastrophic happens to your computers (e.g., victims of a fire or theft).Backups cost time, money and effort to implement, and they are of no value right up until the time you need them. This means they tend to be given a low priority, but ultimately they may easily represent the difference between your business surviving and failing. In this TipSheet, we look at the most common mistakes businesses make with backups.1. Backup oftenRe-entering data is tedious and frustrating. Backing up your company data once a week means that the most you should ever have to re-input is one week's worth Backing up your company data once a day means the most you should ever have to re-input is one day's worth. Frequent backups lessen the impact of data loss.2. Don't keep any volatile data on desktop PCsIn many organisations, documents are kept on the hard drive of desktop PCs. It is unlikely that this is backed up regularly, if at all. A PC can easily be replaced: last week's quotations may not be so easy to replace. In particular, check that email is not stored on the local hard drive (this is very common in small to medium size businesses). All documents, spreadsheets, email, etc should be kept on a central server, which is in turn backed up regularly.3. Automate the backup processBackups are tedious to do. At 6:30pm, most people would prefer to set off home or join colleagues in the bar rather than stay in the office to find the correct tape and start a backup. Automating tedious tasks means they get done.4. Monitor the backup processWhile automating backups is a good idea, do check that they are running correctly. Make sure new files are being backed up; make sure the files of new users are being backed up. A quick check once a week could avert a much more serious problem later.5. Keep backups offsiteIf your business premises suffer a fire or flood, it is likely that backup media will be lost as well. Fireproof safes only protect media for a given time, typically one hour - if you use one, check the manufacturer's specification. If you always keep your backup tape in the server then when it is stolen the thief will probably throw the tape away. It's worth nothing to him, but it could represent bankruptcy to you.6. Produce a "backup recovery" manualA major disaster is not the time to try to remember how to recover data from your backup media. Have an idiot-proof, step-by-step procedure written - with a copy stored off-site - detailing how to reinstate your company data.7. Test the recovery procedure periodicallyWithout warning, give the backup recovery manual to a member of staff and see how long it takes them to recover data. Many organisations never do this! No one involved with creating the manual or the backups themselves should be involved in the test. The results of the test should be analysed and the manual updated accordingly. A recovery test should be carried out at least twice a year. This proves both that the backups themselves are usable, and that your organisation understands how to use them if necessary.About The AuthorKeith Edmunds has been helping companies get the most from their IT investment for over twenty years. ***3 Ways Computers Can Hurt Your Ministry - Part 1 - Ineffective Data Backups***

Our computers have become almost indispensable ministry tools. What would you do if the worst happened and you had to function without your computers? Would your ministry survive?This article is the first in a 3-part series on how to protect your ministry from serious computer-related loss. This time we?re going to focus on protecting your critical data with effective backups. In the next two installments, we?ll cover the basics of network security and finally what you should know about software license compliance.Ineffective data backups really do have the potential to hurt your ministry. Here are some frightening statistics:31% of PC users have lost all of their files due to events beyond their control.60% of companies that lose their data will shut down within 6 months of the disaster.Armed with the right knowledge, you can protect yourself and avoid becoming another statistic.Back Up Your Data!Most people would agree that computer data is one of their most valuable organizational assets. What would you do if all your donor and accounting files were suddenly gone forever because a hard drive on your server crashed? This could also happen through disgruntled employees, accidental deletion, corruption in one of your software programs or even because of an attack from an outside hacker. The first line of defense in protecting your ministry data is to perform regular backups.What exactly is a backup? It?s when you make a copy of your important data and keep it in a safe place, so you can restore that data if it ever becomes necessary later. The most common method of backing up data is to use a tape drive and backup tapes. I?ll have some important recommendations for you later in this article, but the critical thing to understand is that you MUST do something?any kind of data backup is better than none at all. If you ignore your data, it just might go away!Back to the FutureRemember the 1985 movie ?Back to the Future?? Just like the character in that film used a sports car to travel back in time, you can take your ministry back in time, too. Instead of keeping just one backup copy of your data, you should set up a system that keeps copies of your data for set time intervals (every day, every week, every month, every quarter, every year, etc.). Use a different tape or disk for each backup you make and then label them by date, and you will soon have a library of archived data backups you can restore from as needed.Why go through all that trouble? Well, suppose you find out that a very important Excel spreadsheet is now corrupted and you can?t open it. You haven?t used it for several months, and your backup strategy has been to keep writing over the same tapes every week. Chances are all the backups of that Excel file are probably corrupted, too! But what if you would?ve used a different strategy and kept an archive of your backups for each month of the previous year? You could then easily go back in time to the month when you knew the Excel file was still working and restore that copy?the issue would be quickly & easily resolved. Time travel can be pretty useful sometimes!How to Make Effective Data BackupsIf you have multiple computers networked in your office, keeping all your data in a single location (like a file server) and backing that up every night is the recommended way to perform backups. I would also recommend using a 20-tape rotation, which gives you the ability to ?go back in time? up to a whole year (in various intervals) to restore important files.You should also keep the most recent copy of your backup off-site (i.e., at another location away from your office). This is critical because if your building burned to the ground, your data backups would be destroyed right along with it. With a recent off-site copy, you could restore what you need on new equipment and get back to the business of ministry quickly.I recommend using enterprise-quality backup software to perform your data backups. Good software, like Veritas Backup Exec and Computer Associates BrightStor ArcServe will schedule everything for you, run automatically and keep logs of everything that does and doesn?t get backed up. These programs can also notify you by email (or some other method) when a backup is finished, if it was successful and whether or not you need to address anything. Aside from a little ongoing monitoring, everything can be automated. All you have to do is remember to change tapes every day.If you?re a home office or small office user without the resources to do tape backups, a ZIP drive, an external hard drive, a CD / DVD burner or even one of those cool little USB jump drives that fit on a key ring would all be options to consider. There are also services that let you do online backups over the Internet for a monthly fee. These are good options, as long as the amount of data isn?t too large. Some services you can check into include Remote Data Backups, U.S. Data Trust's LiveVault Online Backup Service and iBackup.Another Form of InsuranceBackups are really like another form of insurance. What kind of problems would you have if your ministry data was wiped out? Could it be replaced at any price? With a relatively small initial investment in equipment and some ongoing monitoring and maintenance, you can practically guarantee that your critical data will be available when you need it.Protecting your data by effective backups is only part of the solution. Next time we?ll talk about some simple steps you can take to protect your network against hackers, viruses, disgruntled employees and other potential vulnerabilities.Donnie Schexnayder is a ministry technology expert. ***Understanding Video Game Ratings***

As a parent today, you most likely understand the ratings on the movies that your children are watching. But, do you really know what the ratings on their video games mean? Are your children playing games on there video game systems or on the computer that are meant only for adults?The Entertainment Software Rating Board has a very simple ratings system in place that we should know about. It is especially important to learn about the video game rating system, since most children can buy these games without a problem in many stores today.EC ? Early ChildhoodThis rating indicates that the game is suitable for ages 3 and up. Games that are rated EC contain no material that parents would find inappropriate.E ? EveryoneA game marked E is suitable for children 6 years and older. There may be minimal cartoon, fantasy, or mild violence and / or infrequent use of mild language.E 10+ - Everyone 10+Titles rated E 10+ have content that may be suitable for ages 10 and older. Titles in this category may contain more cartoon, fantasy or mild violence, mild language and / or minimal suggestive themes.T ? Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and / or graphic sexual content and nudity.RP ? Rating PendingGames listed as RP have been submitted to the ESRB and are awaiting final rating. (This symbol appears only in advertising prior to a game's release.)As parents, we have the right to be informed about what our children are viewing. We also have the responsibility to keep ourselves informed, and keep our children away from content that is inappropriate for their age. I urge parents to stay up to date on any information about ratings in the future, and be smart when choosing games and software for your children.This article has been written by Vanessa Pruitt, a work from home mom working to promote wellness. ***Online Games Voice Technology***

Online games have become rapidly popular over the last few years. In fact, it has become a multi-billion dollar industry. These massive virtual worlds provide a realistic, engaging environment in which people can play and interact. It has been a fertile ground for gamers from all walks of life to come together. As a result, these games have produced large and vibrant online communities.In these virtual worlds, you can choose an avatar or character that represents you. The latest games offer the ability to customize these characters in unlimited ways; you can change your character?s hairstyle, facial features, size, weight, and clothing. How about the ability to change your voice to match your online personality? That is currently not a standard feature in games. But I do see technology stepping in and providing a solution.Think of the possibilities: gamers could now change their voice to sound like a troll, giant, dwarf or dark lord. They've spent many hours making their online character to look a certain way, why not change their voice to match? It is products like MorphVOX by Screaming Bee that can fill this need. MorphVOX is voice-changing software specifically designed for online games. This tool allows gamers to role-play more effectively. Not only can they look the part, they can also have a voice to match.Voice communication in games has been around for quite some time, but only recently has gained popularity in online games. Much of this may have to do with the increase in the number of people who now have broadband Internet connections instead of dial-up. This provides the extra precious bandwidth to cover an additional voice channel. As voice chat is becoming increasingly prevalent in online game use, companies like Xfire, TeamSpeak, and Ventrillo have emerged to meet the needs.One company, Xfire, demonstrates the popularity of voice chat. Xfire provides a free application that can be used by gamers to easily find friends online and communicate in game. Starting in 2004, the company?s market share has rapidly grown to almost four million users.Many gamers are finding voice chat to be a superior way to communicate as opposed to the slower process of typing messages on a keyboard. If a monster jumps out, there is no need for fumbling with the keys when you need to shout for help. Voice chat also lets gamers coordinate large groups of people effectively in large raids.What about role-playing and voice communication? There is some reluctance to use voice communication in online role-playing games. Much of this issue stems from the lack of good voice-changing tools in the past that can work effectively with games. In addition, there is less control of good content on voice chat. External noises, such as other people talking in the same room, are very distracting and can?t be easily masked over a microphone. Also, some less helpful gamers could use voice chat to taunt or annoy other people, who may be unable to turn off an in-game voice channel. And role-playing over live voice communication poses a challenge for most people of finding the right thing to say at the right time. Most of us aren?t very good at extemporaneous acting ? improvising in real-time.However, new online games such as Dungeons & Dragons Online (DDO) provide in-game voice capabilities that are adding a new life to role-playing. Many people are now starting to adopt voice chat as an important part of their in-game experience. As games like DDO become more common, I foresee brighter days ahead for voice communication. By providing a rich auditory experience, voice chat will improve realism for gamers. This is part of the never-ending process of adding more immersion to these virtual worlds.Mark Ramirez is CEO and co-founder of Screaming Bee LLC, a leading provider of voice software and solutions for online games and messenger applications. ***N - Classic Gaming with a New Twist (A Review)***

If you've ever wasted hours or even days on playing a video game on your old Commodore 64, then chances are it was a game called Load Runner. Well, it's amazing how this genre has come back full circle. "N" is such a game. Developed in Flash by Raigan Burns and Mare Sheppard, of Metanet Software Inc.My first sight of this game was from watching my son play it on his computer. I instantly became mesmerized by it's smoothness and the intricate details in the movement of the main character as it moves, flys, jumps, and falls thoughout maze after maze of enemies and bonuses. I especially took note of the simplicity of the game. Finally, someone has released a game that one can sit down to and play without having to crack open a 20 page instruction guide. But don't be fooled! There are over 200 levels to get through! And what amazes me, is that after watching my three sons play this during the past few weeks, they've yet to finish the game! They're totally hooked. The family PS2, with its adrenalin pumping shooters, 3-d ray traced, real-time graphics, and total game play immersion - sits cold and alone. Only to be touched if one of the boys is waiting for their time on the PC with N.The ART of Software Development in N, is not just in the finished product and its ability to capture the gamer. Its also in the fact that Raigan and Mare have published source and tutorials on their web site, which explains the technique and process of developing this wonderful game. And we not just talking a few rapid paragraphs here! This is a full blown tutorial on Collision Detection, Physics, Movement, Geometry, and Mathmatics. With pictures and diagrams too! For anyone who wants a full blown education on the science of game design and development, this is the place to go!I can't say enough about this amazing game, the Metanet website, and the kindness of the developers. There is heart in the offices of Metanet Software Inc.! I have no doubt that we'll be hearing more about Raigan, Mare, and Metanet! You'll find this quote on their web site: "We're not professional -- that's our strength." That pretty much sums it up.You can check out N at: http: / / www.harveycartel.org / metanetTimothy Trimble, The ART of Software DevelopmentTimothy Trimble is a award winning, freelance writer, and software developer.
