***The Role of Nutrition in Reducing AMD-linked Vision Loss***

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is an acquired vision disorder and, together with cataracts, a leading cause of legal blindness in the over 60s. Since AMD affects the central part of the retina (macula), which is responsible for acuity of vision, many activities, including reading, writing, sports and driving can become extremely difficult tasks for sufferers to perform.What part, then, can nutrition play in relation to this eye disease? Given that approximately 10 million Americans suffer from early onset AMD and half-a-million from significant loss of vision due to late-stage AMD, the question is an urgent one. The disease's severity and irreversibility adds to the urgency.Research has suggested that AMD develops with the reduction of pigment in the macula. This retinal layer plays a dual role: it filters out harmful blue wavelengths of light and mops up free radicals found in large concentrations in this area. Free radicals damage the cell membranes and the macular pigment.The theory goes that nutrition, in particular certain antioxidant compounds, can reduce the harmful effects of free radicals and, as a consequence, may act to slow the progression of AMD. teksty recent large clinical trial conducted by the National Eye Institute (NEI) supports this theory.Let's examine its methods and findings. The effect of a high dose antioxidant, vitamin combination (C & teksty) plus zinc, was tested on participating patients with advanced signs and symptoms of AMD. The doses tested were as follows:500 mg. Vitamin C
400 IU Vitamin teksty
15 mg. Beta-Carotene ( a carotenoid and antioxidant effective in building and maintaining the thickness of the retinal pigment layer)
80 mg. Zinc
2 mg. Copper (high dosage of zinc can cause anemia and copper acts as a corrective.)The findings supported the hypothesis that high levels of antioxidants are an effective treatment in slowing the progression of AMD. For this high-risk group of patients it was found that the supplement reduced the risk of developing advanced AMD by about one-quarter and reduced vision loss by about one-fifth.The NEI concluded that, for people over the age of 55 who display signs of intermediate to late vision loss due to AMD, taking a high-dose vitamin combination plus zinc similar to that used in the clinical trial, is highly desirable. 300,000 people at high risk from AMD- associated vision loss would benefit from the treatment. It has indeed proven to be an effective means of limiting the disease in patients with advanced signs and symptoms of AMD.Given this positive association between nutrition and AMD, it is interesting and helpful to compare the levels of Vitamin C and teksty provided by eating five daily servings of nuts and seeds, with the dosage taken in the trial.Choosing pigment-rich fruits and vegetables (oranges, strawberries, green peppers, broccoli) can provide more than 100 mg. Vitamin C daily. Two daily servings of nuts and seeds (almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds) can provide 8-14 mg. Vitamin teksty (11.9-20.8 IU).The above recommended dietary allowances (RDA), however, fall well short of the levels associated with health benefits to vision (see doses above) illustrated by the WEI's Age-Related Eye Disease Study. This is not to say, though, that good food sources of antioxidants should be overlooked in favor of supplements: the bowels and colon benefit from the anti-carcinogenic properties of fiber-rich foods.The wisest option for those who display early signs of AMD, have a genetic predisposion for the disease and are over 50, is to eat a healthy diet and supplement this with good-quality, organically-sourced nutrients.Such a dietary regime is vitally important when put into the context of current average intake. Over half of Americans get much less than 100% of their Vitamin C RDA from their diet and more than 90%, less than 100% of their Vitamin teksty RDA.Finally, it is important to emphasise that the use of good nutrition based on high levels of antioxidants cannot turn back the clock and reverse the damage already caused by AMD. However, many patients with AMD can experience a delay in the advancement of their condition if a diet high in antioxidant-rich foods and supplements is adopted.? 2006 Maureen P Cook

***Do You Want to Know How to Beat Gout***

Gout is a nasty condition whereby your body does not balance the uric acid in the blood properly, causing excess uric acid to be deposited into joints which then crystallizes and causes inflammation. This is an extremely painful condition.I first had this condition when I was only 32 years old. That experience was followed by a kidney stone formed from the uric acid crystal. At first it was very hard to diagnose. They would take a blood test and the uric acid levels would show normal.But I would continue to have attacks, usually in the big toe. This is the typical place, but it can happen in any joint. I have experienced it many times in both feet, ankles, big toes, knee, shoulder and one time in a finger. The worst case was in the shoulder. The larger the joint the more pain and problems it causes.When you have it low in the feet or knee joints, you cannot walk or have great trouble doing so. When it is in your shoulder, you can hardly do anything. Like simply putting on a shirt felt like you were going to keel over with pain.The usual drug for controlling this condition is allupurinol. Take one pill a day and keep the inflammation away. The condition is made worse by diet. It is sometimes called the drinking disease, because alcohol can greatly contribute to flare-ups but it is not the cause.It is mostly found in men, but women can have it too. It is hereditary and in my case my father, brother and son have the condition, but I was the worst. I had a bout once that last 8 weeks, in which time I could not put any weight on my foot.I consumed large doses of aspirin to combat the inflammation, but it just dragged on for what seemed forever. But all things pass with time. The real problem is in your diet. Overindulging in meat and fat is the most likely reason for excess uric acid.After several bouts of suffering the condition, it finally showed up in the blood test and I got on the medicine, but you know what, it seemed to always fail to do the job 1 to 3 times per year. It was not until just about 3 years ago that I found a permanent solution.As least I believe it to be so, since I have not had even 1 gout attack in that time period since starting on a natural formula called Cherry Flex. It is a fruit supplement made with whole fruit. It is advertised as helping maintain healthy joint function.Well I can surely say amen to that, since I have taken a softgel capsule every day for the past 3 years without 1 problem whatsoever. Now I am not always the best at watching my diet. I over indulged in eating meat quite often.But even with all that there is still no problem. When I have a blood test it shows my uric acid level is at the top of the normal range, just on the brink you might say, but the daily dose of cherry flex keeps the inflammation away. It has made my life so much better.
I cannot tell you how many times it has ruined the quality of my life and caused me to miss out on so many great events. I had problems just at the wrong time, such as on vacations and important events.I even had to give up a job one time because of the constant inability to walk. It seemed hopeless at the time. The main ingredient of the capsule is tart cherries which contains 100 mg Anthocyanins per capsule. It has long been known that cherries helped with the problem of gout, but have you ever tried to eat a ton of cherries everyday of your life?Probably you couldn?t eat it for a month or even a week. The capsule is easy to take and about the same cost as taking the regular medicine. I hope this brings help and comfort to all those who suffer from this problem.http: / / www.free-vacation-offer.netAuthor Terry teksty. McGee resides in West Virginia with Wife Valerie. ***Do Your Products Contain Any of These Dangerous Chemicals?*** unimarter UniMarter
***Do Your Products Contain Any of These Dangerous Chemicals?***

Go to your Bathroom and check RIGHT NOW!
I think you will be VERY SURPRISED...These are some of the dangerous chemicals that people in our society are using every day and are not being told about how dangerous they are. You will want to avoid them to enjoy good health. They can cause cancer, nervous system damage, birth defects, and much more. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health listed 884 dangerous chemicals, and according to The Safe Shoppers Bible, 400 have been identified in human tissue. ?The greater the exposure, the greater the risk!? This is a PARTIAL LIST of some of the most commonly used chemicals in the personal care industry. See if your shampoo, conditioner, soap, mouthwash, toothpaste, lotions, household cleaners, etc. contain any of the chemicals on the list. I can bet you the products you are currently using contain some, if not all, of the dangerous chemicals on this list below.Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)- (Engine Degreaser! In many personal care products, and most shampoos). Well-known as a skin and scalp irritant, easily absorbed in eyes, brain, and liver ? may have harmful long term effects, possible carcinogen, could retard healing ? causes cataracts in adults and keeps children?s eyes from developing properly.Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)- (in many personal care products and many shampoos) Both SLS and SLES are potential carcinogens and may form dioxane when interacting with other chemicals. Clinical studies show both of these chemicals causing hair loss.Propylene Glycol- (Industrial Antifreeze! In many personal care products, and most shampoos and many conditioners). The Material Safety Date Sheet warns users to avoid skin contact ? strong irritant, can cause hair loss, cataracts, liver abnormalities and kidney damage. This is called a ?humectant? in cosmetics.Aluminum- (in antiperspirants--deodorants, antacids, and antiseptics) Linked to Alzheimer?s Disease.Cocomide DEA or DEA- (many products ? up to 600) teksty known carcinogen.Sodium Fluoride- (in toothpaste) Can cause death when ingested ? lots of research ? potential carcinogen.Mineral Oil- Comes from crude oil (petroleum) used in the industry as a metal cutting fluid. May suffocate the skin by forming an oil film. Healthy skin needs to take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. This process should not be inhibited. Holding large amounts of moisture in the skin can "flood" the biology, and may result in immature, unhealthy, sensitive skin that dries out easily. Studies show those who work around this ingredient have a greater chance of being diagnosed with cancer.Petroleum- Same properties as Mineral Oil. Industrially, it is used as a grease component.
Bentonite or Kaolin- (in cosmetics and facial masks) May suffocate the skin, stopping the release of toxins. Used by fire departments to suffocate forest fires.Glycerin- When applied to the skin, it draws moisture from inside the skin, and holds it on the surface for a better "feel". Dries the skin from the inside out. This can age you quickly.Collagen- (skin care) May suffocate the skin. Most derived from cow hides and ground up chicken feet. Most products are useless.Flavors / Fragrances (artificial)- Synthetic chemicals used to enhance aroma and taste in personal care products ? some are potentially carcinogenic and may cause brain damage.Colors (coal tar dyes)- (in cosmetics) May cause eye damage, potential carcinogen, can have lead and arsenic in the formation ? possible link to lymphoma.Laureth (ethoxylated), or PEG- (in soaps and shampoos) May contain Dioxane (potential carcinogen), estrogen mimic, endocrine disrupter.Dioxins- Potential carcinogen, possible transfer of dioxin to product from container contamination and / or when SLS goes through the process of ethoxylation ? This process makes the product more mild, but dioxin can form. Anytime you see a capital ?teksty? in the product line, this process has taken place (possible link to Vietnam Veterans and cancer epidemic, due to dioxin in agent orange).Bar Soaps- Made from animal fat and lye. May let bacteria feed and grow in it. May corrode & dry the skin.Toluene- (in nail polish) Irritant to skin and respiratory tract. It may cause liver damage ? endocrine disrupter ? potential carcinogen and can cause birth defects.Formaldehyde- (in many cosmetics and personal care products) teksty toxic irritant, known carcinogen (causes cancer), used as a preservative.Benzoic or Benzyl- (in cosmetics) Potential carcinogen, endocrine disrupters, birth defects.Fluorocarbons- (used a propellants in hairsprays and deodorants) May produce upper respiratory tract irritation.Lanolin- (in cosmetics and lotions) This lotion can cause allergic reactions and skin rash.Talc- (in cosmetics and many personal care products) Chemically similar to asbestos. Talc has been shown to cause uteral and ovarian cancer.?Did you know fluoride in your toothpaste could actually kill you and / or your children?? Children have died from swallowing toothpaste. That?s why there?s a warning label now. Check your toothpaste box. It probably says, ?Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed, contact a poison control center immediately!??Is it possible you are actually using Engine Degreaser or Garage Floor Cleaner to wash your hair and brush your teeth with?? You are if there?s Sodium Lauryl or Laureth Sulfate (SLS or SLES) in your shampoo and toothpaste because that?s exactly what those ingredients are! But it gets worse. SLS & SLES are carcinogenic, can cause children?s eyes to develop abnormally, cataracts and even hair loss! Also, check your bubble baths, shaving creams, facial / body cleansers and more for SLS or SLES.?Could you be accidentally rubbing antifreeze and / or brake fluid all over your children and yourself?? You are if there is Propylene Glycol in your moisturizers, hair conditioners, wrinkle creams, baby wipes, lotions, etc. Look at a container of Prestone Antifreeze. It says ?Propylene Glycol?. If your cat drinks it, it will die. So what?s it doing to you? Well, for one, it?s been proven to cause liver and kidney damage. Even though we put it on the skin, it gets into the body and blood. Just like a ?nicotine patch? you put on the skin to stop smoking. It works by getting nicotine into the blood.?Women? are you using products that actually age and wrinkle your skin (face & body) more rapidly?? You are if you?re using moisturizers that contain mineral oil, elastin, collagen, glycerin or petroleum (and also foundations that contain forms of clay). These ingredients have a high molecular weight. They suffocate the skin by keeping oxygen out and toxins in. Two ingredients in cosmetics, bentonite and kaolin, are actually used by fire departments to suffocate fires! Also, blush can contain talc, and eye mascara can contain coal tar? both can cause cancer! Talc is also in baby powders and other powders which are linked to ovarian cancer. Some eye shadows can cause cataracts and permanently impaired vision.?Could the underarm deodorant you?re using be linked to Alzheimer?s disease & breast cancer?? It could if it has aluminum in it.?Can the Mouthwash you?re using be linked to Oral / Throat Cancer?" Children die every month from drinking it.?Are you using a mineral supplement that contains 5 toxic poisons?? (Arsenic, Mercury, Lead, Cadmium and Aluminum)?Did you know that CBS recently did an entire news special on a cancer causing ingredient called DEA?? It?s in most every brand of shampoo, bubble bath, and shaving cream we?ve inspected? but it doesn?t have to be? So why is it there?Also, Beware of These Misleading but Frequently Used Cosmetic Terms:Hypoallergenic Products- Personal care products formulated with fewer ingredients that could trigger an ?allergic response?. The prefix ?hypo-? means ?less than?, and the word hypoallergenic tells the consumer that the manufacturer believes the product has fewer allergens than other products. There are no federal regulations or guidelines defining allergens. For the consumer, this term as applied to cosmetics or personal care products is Often Inconclusive.Natural Cosmetics or Natural Personal Care Products- No artificial ingredients, pure, or from nature. There is NO LEGAL definition for ?natural?, which is why you see it everywhere. teksty chemist?s definition of organic simply requires that the molecule contain carbon. There are no guidelines surrounding what can or cannot be inside a ?natural? product. Most cosmetics and personal care products labeled ?natural? still contain preservatives, coloring agents, and other ingredients that really are very unnatural. The term natural is more meaningful when accompanied by the words ?safe? and ?effective?. (Poison Ivy is natural).Copyright 2006 HM

***How to Discover the Most Potent Form of Aloe Vera***

Aloe Vera is a wonderful, necessary supplement for good health and well being. It's anti-inflammatory, blood sugar balancing, anti-pathogenic, free radical scavenging, and immune modulating. As such it's extremely effective in bolstering and balancing the immune system.There are many forms of immune system supplements on the market today including pills, liquid, aloe juice, and freeze dried soluble powders. If you do your due diligence and seek information you will reach the obvious conclusion that freeze dried aloe is by far the most effective way to absorb the benefits into your system.The most potent aloe vera product on the market today is freeze dried. But freeze dried aloe vera is even more potent if it?s produced from only from the pure aloe gel. This will give the product the highest range of molecular weight possible. The more complete the molecular weight, the more complete the healing properties will be.AIDS is a bell weather disease regarding the immune system because the HIV virus launches a direct attack upon it. Any product that positively affects the symptoms of this disease can certainly positively affect any other attack on the immune system.Because of it's potency in terms of it's purity and absorption into the body, a freeze dried product from the gel only repairs the immune system in a universal fashion resulting in the reversal of countless number of conditions and diseases. If a powerfully destructive disease like AIDS can be reversed with a natural treatment that repairs the immune system in a universal fashion, then literally all disease will benefit from this type of treatment.By hand filleting the gel off the Aloe leaf and combining other proprietary extraction and mixing techniques 21st Century Aloe Vera freeze dried powder contains all the healing advantages of the fresh plant in a concentrated form. 7-8 gallons of fresh gel make 1 ounce of this product! The biggest whole leaf juice competitor contains 97% of its molecular weights under 150,000 Daltons, which makes it almost useless in terms of healing properties.Other more advanced freeze dried competitors do better with 99% of its molecular weight up to 1,000,000 Daltons. But they use alcohol in their antiquated freeze dried process while 21st Century uses none. 10% of 21st Century HGH has molecular weights from 1,000,000 to 2,500,000 Daltons. You can't find a more complete or potent aloe vera product anywhere.In the rest of the aloe vera industry there are not very many products that actually offer anything more than 150,000 Daltons in molecular weights, a long way off any meaningful healing result.Only the gel from aloe vera should be used for human consumption and not the whole leaf. All whole leaf products contain broken down MPS (Mucilaginous Poly Saccharide) molecules and therefore no real healing properties. Even worse than this is that whole leaf supplements contain caustic minerals and enzymes that are very hard on the stomach. Freeze dried products made only from the gel are very soothing and healing to the stomach.MPS from the aloe plant is the sticky portion of the plant. It is a long sugar molecule arranged in long linear chains. The longer the chain, the more MPS weights. The MPS molecule ranges from 10,000 to 2,500,000 Daltons. For all the healing effects to be available in an aloe vera supplement, all the molecular weight ranges need to be there.Unfortunately, there are not very many aloe vera products on the market that actually offer anything more than a few thousand Daltons in molecular weights of the MPS molecule. By hand filleting the gel off the leaf, freeze drying with a proprietary method of mixing the powder including the vast and complete range of MPS molecular weights 21st Century Aloe Vera contains all the healing advantages of the fresh plant.About The Author

***High Blood Pressure Treatment: Learn How to Ease That Pressure!***

High blood pressure is one of the most common after-30 ailments. And funnily enough, many people accept it as the way of life. Am interesting thing about hypertension is that as people lose weight, their blood pressure tends to normalize, but only during normal activities. No sooner do they get perturbed, ever so slightly, than the blood pressure shoots up again.This of course brings us to the belief that to actually control blood pressure, one must manage it holistically. Blood pressure management necessitates the following:Nutrition:To control high blood pressure, one must cut down on heavy salted foods, pickles, processed and refined food, maida, sooji and alcohol. Foods that are good for managing blood pressure are oats (can be eaten as oat porridge or oat bread) and barley.The unique effect of barley is that it helps the body get rid of all that excess water through the kidneys. This, in effect, decreases the load on the heart.Vegetarians across the world in general tend to have lower blood pressure, so being a vegetarian once a week may be a good idea. Add lots of fruits and vegetables to the diet, they will help lower blood pressure. In a harvard study of over 31,000 middle aged people, it was seen that people who ate little or no fruits were 46 per cent more likely to be hypertensive.Vitamin C found in amla, oranges, lime and many other fruits have a protective effect on the blood vessels.Potassium in the diet lowers blood pressure. In a study conducted in Italy, it was seen that after a year of adding potassium to a diet of hypertensive patients, 81 percent lowered their dose of medication. Foods rich in potassium are potato, peaches, prunes, spinach, oranges.Calcium rich foods also decrease the blood pressure, and adding green leafy vegetables is a good source of calcium. Finally, losing excess weight helps lower blood pressure.Yoga and Pranayam-Breathing is one of the simplest ways to balance and control the nerves and our ancient practice of pranayam has shown the beneficial effects of naadi-shodhan.However, some detox / cleansing breathing techniques are not recommended for high blood pressure. Therefore, consulting an expert before beginning is a must.Random Tip- "Exercise : Encourage regular exercise program. Stop smoking. Test cholesterol. Renal and endocrine causes should be ruled out.Nature Care: Garlic is regarded as one of the most effective remedies to lower blood pressure. Garlic has the power to ease the spasm of the small arteries. amla, lemon and watermelon also help in reducing hypertension. Foods rich in calcium like dairy products and potassium like fruits and vegetables have an important role in stabilizing hypertension. "Must Visit: Pregnancy Yoga- Exercise, journals and positions of yoga which help in pregnancy at http: / / www.weightloss-health.com / yoga%20exercise%20position.htmHerbs-Parsley juice in fresh form (good for adrenals and thyroid) and alfa-alfa sprouts are great for hypertensives (however, do not take garlic in hot weather). There are many other herbs that can be prescribed by a herbologist / naturopath.Aromatherapy-Aromatic herbs such as ylang-ylang have a relaxing effect on the nerves. they can be used as bathing oils or as additions to massage oils (easily available at stores).Music and Sound Therapy-Many sounds and music are very soothing for the nerves. Depending on personal tastes, one ca for spa music available at most stores or try chanting 'Om'. This week lets try pranayam- check your pulse and blood pressure before and after pranayam and hopefully you will notice some change.Have a great week ahead-> :-)Hypertension Signs and Symptoms: The person may present with headache, tiredness, dizziness, pain and aches in the leg, back, shoulder region, arms, pain in the heart region, frequent urination, fatigue, emotional upset, tiredness, wakefulness, excessive perspiration.Complications: Stroke due to cerebral heamorrhage (bleeding) or cerebral infarction, brain damage. ***How to Survive Free Radical Damage***

Let's face it ...You've probably heard about free radicals before and you might have just assumed it was a bunch of teksty.S. But have you ever wondered exactly what are free radials, what can cause them and how you can combat the effects?If you've heard about them but were curious as the natural of them, you'll be interested in this article.What Are Free Radicals?:An atom or group of atoms that has at least one unpaired electron and is therefore unstable and highly reactive. In animal tissues, free radicals can damage cells and are believed to accelerate the progression of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and age-related diseases.What Can Cause Them?:External Factors -* Smoking
* Food (ingested substances, preparation, pesticides)
* Pollutants in the air (chemicals in the area)
* Radiation
* Excessive amounts of sunlight
* Alcohol
* DrugsInternal Factors -* Immune system
* Stress
* Energy production (exercise)
* Many other chemical reactions in the body
* Body's own out of control production (just as damaging as external factors)What Diseases Are Linked To Them?:* Cancer
* Arteriosclerosis, atherosclerosis.
* Heart disease.
* Cerebrovascular disease.
* Stroke.
* Emphysema (Cross et al 1987).
* Diabetes mellitus (Sato et al 1979).
* Rheumatoid arthritis (Cross et al 1987, Greenwald & Moy 1979, 1980, Halliwell 1981, 1989, Del Maestro et al 1982, Fligiel et al 1984).
* Osteoporosis (Hooper 1989, Stringer et al 1989).
* Ulcers.
* Sunburn.
* Cataracts (Niwa & Hansen, 1989, Yagi 1977).
* Crohn's disease (Niwa & Hansen 1989).
* Behcet's disease
* Aging
* SenilityBenefits of Free Radicals:* Essential role in the human body's defense
* Virus and bacteria are showered with a type of toxic shower when the body intentionally produces free radicals as part of its immune defense systems to destroy invadersAntioxidant "Free Radical" Prevention Methods:* Natural enzymes
* Nutrients (vitamins teksty, C, teksty primary antioxidants)
* Self-RepairWhat You Can Do To Prevent Free Radical Damage:* Vitamin and mineral supplementation
* Steer clear of heavy processed foods
* Diet high in fruits and vegetablesAntioxidant Foods:* Artichokes
* Bilberries
* Black beans
* Blackberries
* Black plums
* Blueberries
* Cauliflower
* Cranberries
* Gala apples
* Granny Smith apples
* Pecans
* Peppers
* Pinto beans
* Plums
* Prunes
* Raspberries
* Red beans
* Red Delicious apples
* Red kidney beans
* Russet potatoes
* Strawberries
* Sweet cherries
* Tomatoes
* Wild blueberriesSummary:It seems like free radicals are discussed a lot when it comes to exercising only because the more you exercise, the more free radicals you will have because of energy production. That's not entirely a bad thing. The name "free radical" sounds very negative but it's there for a purpose as well, primary as a defense system. Of course, it can go out of control as well.Monitoring the levels of free radicals is difficult to measure.Vitamins teksty, C and teksty are the primary nutrients to prevent free radical damage.Most will recommend a diet high in fruits and vegetables to obtain natural antioxidant sources but vitamin supplementation is also recommended. There's enough evidence to suggest that food processing today has taken out some of the nutritional values. True or not, if you eat correctly AND supplement responsibly, you should be covered per the recommendations.Marathon runners or high altitude running may require more Vitamin teksty 10-14 days before a run because of the extra long term stress and energy production.If you stick to a good basic diet with fruits and vegetables and take a good vitamin supplement, you should be well protected against excess free radical damage without interfering with the body's own ability to defend itself.Copyright 2006 Marc DavidYou will learn the nutrition fundamentals necessary to avoid excessive oxidation and free radical damage in the Beginner's Guide to Fitness and Bodybuilding

***Oxidative Stress: The Vital Role that Antioxidants Play*** unimarter UniMarter
***Oxidative Stress: The Vital Role that Antioxidants Play***

Oxidative stress is now recognized as the leading cause of chronic disease and aging. It occurs when free radicals spiral out of control.Since we all have free radicals, what role do they play in damaging the body and how do we get rid of them?Free radicals are simply a molecule lacking an electron. The most common free radical in the body is created from oxygen. When oxidized, the oxygen in the air we breathe forms four oxygen free radicals and two nitrogen free radicals, all of which damage cell membranes and DNA.Over time, free radical damage to the tissues and organs accumulates, eventually leading to a point where the body cannot repair itself fast enough. This leads to degenerative diseases and aging, including Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, Parkinson's disease, and cancer. Oxidative damage can also accelerate the cellular destruction that occurs with diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.There are three major ways that free radicals overwhelm the body. One way is through exposure to environmental pollution or toxins, including cigarette smoke, alcohol, automobile exhaust, air pollution, asbestos, radiation, bacterial, fungal or viral infections.The second way that oxidative stress occurs is through the normal metabolic and immune functions of the body. Each time glucose is burned to generate energy, free radicals are created inside the cell. Free radicals are also generated by immune cells in order to destroy invading microorganisms.Thirdly, your emotions and exposure to stress can add to the oxidative stress that occurs in your body. teksty recent study found that women who have experienced extreme stress caring for a chronically ill child have higher levels of oxidative stress in their bodies than do control subjects.Although the body is naturally built to handle free radicals, most of us experience oxidative stress from a combination of sources. In other words, your diet may not be the best, you may be exposed to environmental pollution, or be exposed to emotional stress on a daily basis.This is why antioxidants become so vital to health. Antioxidants are molecules that are loaded with extra free electrons. When we have sufficient antioxidants, free radicals are rendered harmless. Antioxidants are found in Vitamins teksty, C, and teksty and the fruits and vegetables that we eat. However, even eating the 5-8 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, or using supplements often does not do enough to combat oxidative stress.The antioxidant power of fruits and vegetables far surpass their vitamin content. For example, blueberries and raspberries have over 40 times the antioxidant power of pure Vitamin teksty. This is the reason for the French paradox and why it is recommended that we drink red wine. It is not the alcohol in red wine that is benefical to your health. Rather, it is the abundant quantities of polyphenols compounds that have been found in wine that has been dealcoholized.There is an even better source: the newly discovered NingXia wolfberry is the strongest known whole food antioxidant. It is rich in a number of compounds that protect the cellular DNA, such as ellagic acid, beta-caryophyllene, and potassium. The wolfberry has long been regarded as a national treasure by the native Chinese and has been used by Olympic coaches as their "secret weapon" to achieve gold metal results.The wolfberry can be added to the diet in liquid form or as the dried berry. teksty dose of 1-3 ounces of the whole fruit puree will flood the body with the antioxidants that it needs. The wolfberry is the best way to add to your diet the most powerful antioxidants that combat oxidative stress.Faye Durham is a former chemist and clinical research associate in the pharmaceutical industry. ***EU, Anti-Trust, Big Pharma and The Free Market Aspects of Bird Flu Vaccine***

The Bird Flu is marching on and becoming an increasing threat as the H5N1 human strain is in Africa causing issues now. Producing enough vaccine fast enough just is not an option if the strain evolves of mutates to flow quickly like Influenza from human to human. One recent article in the Boston Globe accuses Rouche Pharmaceuticals of predatory price strategies for buying up all the Star Anise Fruit Crop a potential component of the TamiFlu vaccine.If we enlist our Federal Trade Commission to go after them for anti-trust violations when the governments, EU and World Wide Patent laws created this situation in the first place then we put all businesses at a catch 22; in that why bother producing if you are simply going to be attacked? Why make a vaccine in huge quantities? Simply make enough for your self, let the peanut gallery go die of Bird Flu or whatever and screw it? Because this is what will happen if you attack Rouche.Buying 2 Billion in stockpile for a Bird Flu, which may never come is a power play of which the anti-trust issues the article brings up do not address. If we do not buy some of Rouche?s products, then the EU will buy less from Boeing, Ford, GE, Wal-Mart and Microsoft. And if you look at the bigger picture we see problems all over the World as Japan attacks Intel Corp and the EU claims Boeing is being subsidized by the US Military even though the airline division is a separate division and we claim that Airbus is being subsidized, which it is by their nations to provide jobs and economic base there too.The fact is Rouche is a huge player and Bird Flu is the reason to buy from them. I did not see our Big Pharma in the US doing research there to sell vaccines, remember it was all we could do to get them to work on the Anthrax Vaccines. We should not be automatically condemning Rouche for shoring up its supply chain in advance of need for components to make up the tamiflu vaccine, nor should we inhibit free-enterprise from solving the problems which plague mankind. So consider all this in 2006.Lance Winslow - Online Think Tank forum board. If you have innovative thoughts and unique perspectives, come think with Lance; www.WorldThinkTank.net / wttbbs /

***Free Radicals: Destructive Scavengers and the Vital Role Antioxidants Play***

Several years ago, it was all over the news. Free radicals were damaging - we all had them, and antioxidants were the solution. But what role really do free radicals play in damaging the body, and how are we supposed to best get rid of them? How do antioxidants work and what is the best way of adding them to our diet?24 hours a day, while the body is constantly working, cells are metabolizing and creating energy as they carry out their tasks. This natural process results in free radicals, the same way driving to work in your car creates exhaust fumes. Some free radicals are natural byproducts of the ongoing workings of the body. Some are from environmental factors, such as pollution, radiation, and cigarette smoke.teksty free radical is simply a molecule that is missing an electron. As soon as a molecule loses one of its attached electrons, it becomes unstable and seeks to re-stabilize itself by stealing an electron from the nearest molecule. This causes the attacked molecule to then become a free radical, and starts a chain reaction. Ultimately as the process continues this can lead to cell damage.Free radicals become extremely damaging to the body as they steal electrons from your cells. They begin to spread like a wildfire through the years if your body does not have enough antioxidants to keep them in check. They can attack cell walls, get inside the cell, and cause damage to the DNA. This leads to cancer. Cancer is defined as a degenerative stress condition, and we can understand this better when we understand the role free radicals play.The brain is the most active part of the body. It uses the most energy, and therefore is subject to bombardment with the most free radicals. The significance of this is not only that we feel negative effects in our mind - such as feeling tired and muddled - but also because brain is very important in its control of so many of the vital workings of our bodies.When a free radical attacks, it can get into the cell and cause the mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell, to die or cease to function fully. This can disrupt one of a multitude of processes. teksty dead or poorly functioning mitochondria in a cell can disrupt or slow down neuronal firing. Mental illness is largely due to imbalances in the neuronal processes of our natural brain chemistry. teksty poorly working or dead mitochondria can prevent certain natural functions from working, causing symptoms like hormonal imbalance.Untreated, the damage from free radicals accumulates with age. They are the cause of many degenerative diseases, and are associated with many of the signs of the aging process.Antioxidants are molecules loaded with extra free electrons. When we have enough antioxidants the free radicals get their electrons from the antioxidants in our body, rather than stealing them from our cells.The body is naturally built to handle free radicals. Antioxidants are found in the vitamins teksty, C and teksty in the fruits and vegetables we eat. However even eating the 5-8 recommended servings a day, or using supplements still often does not do enough to combat the massive free radical damage.Antioxidants from Vitamins teksty, C, and teksty actually pale in comparison to the phytonutrient antioxidants such as those found in red wine and blueberries. This is the reason for the French paradox, why it is being recommended to drink wine, eat chocolate, and drink green tea. They provide better sources of antioxidants.There is an even better source: the newly discovered acai berry, of the Brazilian rainforest. It provides antioxidants in strengths 33 times more powerful than red wine. It floods the body with massive amounts of antioxidants and other essential nutrients. The acai berry is the number one ingredient for anti-aging recommended by Dr. Nicholas Perricone, in his book the Perricone Promise.The acai berry can be best added to the diet in liquid form. teksty small dose of several ounces daily will flood the body with the vital antioxidants it needs. The acai berry is the best way to add to your diet the most powerful antioxidants combating free radical damage.Carina MacInnes is a writer and entrepreneur who chooses for her daily antioxidant supplement a powerful nutrient packed juice containing vital amounts of the acai berry. ***Alcohol - Fruit Turning Foe*** ?An apple a day keeps the unimarter UniMarter
***Alcohol - Fruit Turning Foe***

?An apple a day keeps the doctor away?. This statement could probably be generalized for other fruits as well. The salubrious nature of fresh fruits, rich in vitamins and minerals is already too well known. But when the same fruit (particularly grapes) is fermented, losing its natural colour and flavor, the end product is a drink for feeling high. But when regularly consumed could actually leave you high and dry. During fermentation, the yeast reacts with the sugars and breaks down into alcohol. It?s all about transformation, first from grapes to wine and then from addiction to rehabilitation.What does alcohol do that its intake becomes so alluring? It basically slows down the nervous system, lowers the inhibitions and affects the ability to make judgments. It takes us into a trance like state, giving a sense of unbridled joy and complete liberation. While some drink for societal needs and status symbol others (usually youths) drink for fun and merry. When it creates such a liberating and sociable atmosphere, why these campaigns against the good old alcohol?Where we do not stop promoting the goodness of fermented milk (yoghurt), there is a hale bulla about fermented barley and grapes. Alcohol is not abusive or harmful by tendency. In fact limited amount of red wine taken with food helps the French people to keep the cholesterol level in control despite their high calorie cuisine. But unlike yoghurt, alcohol needs to be consumed within specified limits. It is the unrestrained and regular consumption that soils the sport. Alcohol enters our system like devil coming in sheep skin. The initial excitement of intoxication paves way for regular drinking and without realizing there lays another prey of it.teksty new civilization is now growing at the door steps of clubs and lounges. And the prime characteristic of this civilization is alcohol or more pleasantly said ?drinks?. Never before was man more dependent on anything than he is now on alcohol. Today to shake your leg you need a drink, to converse with a friend you need a drink and to feel alive you again need a drink. Young men and women, in shimmering outfits, dancing to deafening music are looking for relaxation in the darkness, under those neon lights with one drink after another. And these juveniles make such ignorant bargains that they settle for hangovers instead of sleep.Vomiting, headaches, acidity and hangovers, are common consequences of unchecked drinking. Severe hangovers could last for 48 hours or more. The following morning the sufferer makes a resolution to stay away from the damned bottle. But despite the suffering and the resolution, there we are, basking in the cradles of this new-fangled civilization. All self control begins to wane in front of this charmer. The moment alcohol goes down the throat; it affects every part of your body and mind, paralyzing your rationality. Your sobriety and senses desert you, the tongue goes unleashed and the social norms are jeopardized. This is why drinking is still a taboo in eastern society.Risk of road accidents, unsafe and regretful sex, verbal duels and violence run high under the spell of alcohol. This is not all. The burden on our liver is immense. It takes about an hour for the liver to remove one unit of alcohol from our blood. Regular drinking can be fatal for the liver, damaging it permanently. We are quite aware of the harm we cause and the pressure we exert on the body by drinking yet we go for it by all means. This addictive tendency makes alcohol a threat to reckon with.In the present times, alcohol is assuming ubiquity for all occasions, emotions and society. While the blithe youth gulp peg after peg for enjoyment, the depressed hearts find equal solace in it. The gradual increase of alcohol in the body numbs the mind making us forget all pain and problems. But na?ve that we are, we fail to understand that alcohol does not solve the problem; it only temporarily blinds us to it. And in our illusion of liberation, we even lose our precious time on hangovers instead of concentrating on the issue at hand. Drinking is no treatment for crestfallenness. In fact research shows that regular drinking could lead to permanent depression. The drinking culture is not parochial to the high end society. The lower strata are equally under its clasp. Violent wife abuse by sloshed husbands is an everyday ritual for numerous households all over. This is a sign of disintegrated mind and body.?Life is like an autumn leaf, its hold is frail, its date is brief.? Why should we add to life?s brevity and uncertainty by surrendering to alcohol? Lounging, clubbing, drinking? none is wrong. The fallacy is in our dependency on it. To celebrate life, we turn mindless, lose our senses and create a fake world. And further to handle the blows of the real world, we again dip ourselves in the Bloody Mary. When we start wrong, how can the end be right? We are looking for happiness in the flimsy world of glitz and glamour. Every night your quivering heart takes you to the pub, your craving body gulps a drink and the mind drifts to nothingness. And the morning brings with it a pounding headache. Being tipsy is not being happy or relaxed.We also seek the wrong source to tackle the troubles of life. Our discretion and decision is so flawed that sooner than later, the remedy (drinking) itself becomes the disease. Alcohol is neither a taboo nor poison. But it does not take long for its magic to turn into sorcery. There are beautiful and lasting magical things within you and around you that can transform the surreal into real. Trust in the fountainhead of joy within you and the bottle of wine could be spared.http: / / www.mindbodynsoul.com

***Prolonged Treatment for Whiplash may do more Harm than Good***

Whiplash frequently affects people involved in rear end car accidents; in fact some 22% of all smashes result in soft tissue damage to the neck. Fortunately the condition is not serious and in the majority of cases the symptoms disappear within a few months at the most. However, the symptoms of whiplash are painful for most people and can be extremely debilitating. The headaches, neck ache and back ache commonly suffered, can result in sleeplessness and depression.Commonly the therapy for whiplash involves chiropractic treatments and anti inflammatory drugs. Sometimes heat treatments are used and immobilisation, whilst not used as commonly today, is occasionally recommended. However, new studies in Canada have shown that the greater the medical intervention in whiplash treatment the longer it might take to recover.According to the study carried out on 2500 whiplash patients, if doctors avoid heavy treatment of sufferers within the first month of an injury being sustained, then the pain may subside more quickly. The study showed that extensive manual therapy may be detrimental in the long term and may prolong suffering by up to a year.Many doctors now suggest that the patient should try to resume normal activity as soon as possible in order to mobilise the injury. Physical activity is encouraged to promote strength and flexibility in the neck and to increase the range of motion.When someone is affected by whiplash the chances are that the injury was someone else?s fault. Most rear end accidents are not disputed and the person in the car at the back is at fault in the eyes of the law. If you have had a whiplash injury in the last three years and it can be shown that someone else was responsible for your pain then you are legally entitled to make a compensation claim for your personal injury and for any losses.If you have been unlucky enough to be involved in an accident that resulted in whiplash then we suggest that you consult with a doctor.They will be able to prescribe the best treatment and drugs for you?re your injury.For more information visit www.car-accident-claim.com and get free legal advice about your accident.-ENDS-Editorial notes:Car Accident Adviceline http: / / www.car-accident-claim.com, 0808 143 43 42, is an independent company that works towards claiming compensation for people who have had a non fault car accident. ***Getting Started: Bifocal Contact Lenses*** Maybe you did unimarter UniMarter
***Getting Started: Bifocal Contact Lenses***

Maybe you didn?t know there were such things as bifocal contact lenses? If you thought that your condition was one that was going to cause you to wear nothing but those heavy, thick and hard to use eyeglasses for the rest of your life, you are mistaken. Many individuals who wear glasses for vision correction can use contacts but now, many who need to use bifocals can also use bifocal contact lenses. You don?t have to be left in the dark to suffer. You can reclaim your look and style by choosing these contacts.Are They Right For Me?The question that you need to talk to your eye doctor about is whether or not they are the right choice for your eyes. You will need a new prescription if you do go with them, so take some time to schedule an appointment with your eye doctor and ask just what ability you have to wear contacts. They are not for everyone, unfortunately, but for those who have typically healthy eyesight with a need for bifocals, there is a good possibility that they are right for you.Your eye doctor will provide a number of tests. He is likely checking for your eye?s health. Then, he will take measurements of the eye itself to allow for a right fit. Once this is complete, the doctor will, most of the time, be able to provide you with a set of the correct type of lens for your eyes. At this point, they will also teach you how to put them in, how to wash them and how to handle them. And, he?ll tell you if they are disposable or find the right solution for your specific needs.But, stop there?.What About Price?There are few ways to spend your money that are better than taking care of your eyes. But, you don?t have to go broke doing it either. You can find excellent prices on the contacts that you need. To start, you?ll need that prescription the doctor gave you. While you may go ahead and purchase that first pair from them, you may want to hold off on making a larger purchase as it can be quite expensive. Instead, move to the web. You?ll find excellent options in product selection as well as great deals at the same time.Any location that you do purchase from will require a valid prescription usually within one year of the eye exam. This is necessary as having something just a bit off can really through off the prescription and become quite painful for your eyes. Now, you?ll find websites that offer a wonderful selection and while you can switch from brand to brand, you should never go for a lens that is completely different in nature than what was prescribed. Also, you should request a free sample to insure the comfort of the lens.Lastly, to get a great price on them, all you need to do is shop around. Shopping online will almost always guarantee you discount prices as well as convenience.Susan Dean is the webmaster and publisher of

***Contact Lense Basics***

Hordes of people new to contacts have a lot of questions. What are the steps I should take first? How do I review my prescription? How can I tell if my contact lens is inside out? Are all contacts basically interchangeable? And so on. Read this article for facts on these and other new wearer topics, then go on to the articles in the rest of the Contact Lenses section for further in-depth review.The first step you take is to see an eye doctor. If you need to get into contact lenses, you have got to 1st see an eye doctor optometrist, or in a select few states, a lense maker. This is the case even if you do not commonly put on glasses, and just want contacts to vary your eye hue. The reason you need to make sure and take this measure is contact lenses are medical hardware that require to be properly fitted by an eye care practitioner. In the United Sates of America, contact lenses can be legitimately bought just with a valid written prescription.The ophthalmologist will check your eyes to guarantee it is OK for you to wear contact lenses ; nowadays nearly everybody could, but there are a uncommon couple who cannot. In that case, they will determine your prescription.How to understand your Contact Lens Prescription?Eye doctors all use pretty much interchangeable shorthand to compose contact lens prescriptions. Often, this shorthand can look like a secret code to the uninitiated, but it is actually quite simple to decrypt. Take a look at an example. As well as to the above principles, your prescription could note how typically your contact lenses must be replaced. Your doctor may require you to replace them monthly, bimonthly, weekly, or daily. You may be instructed verbally, during your exam. Commonly the lens brand name includes this data , but the actual judge is your eye care practitioner, who understands which replacement option is ideal for your eyes and lifestyle.How do I apply my contact lenses?The difference can be subtle, but warranty the lens looks more like a taco than a soup bowl. teksty enquiry many first-time wearers use is, How will I tell if my contact lens is wrong side out? The trick is to set the lens on your finger so it is looking like a cup, then hold it up directly in front of your eyes so you are searching the side of the cup. If it is making a u shape with the top bounds flared out, the lense if the lense is forming a u shape it is right.teksty minimal number of contact lenses also have a laser marker, like the brand name, on the edge to assist you. If you can understand it properly, the lens is not inside out. Do not worry if you put a contact lens in your eye inside out. It will likely feel uncomfortable, but it cannot create any harm.SEO Solutions and one way link publicity services provided by LinkAcquire.David C Skul - CEO LinkAcquire.com and Relativity, Inc. can provide global market exposure and solutions.

***Zeros and Freedoms***

Did you ever notice that there are some things that just don?t matter any more? Things seem to lose their places: important things, trivial things, ceremonial things, traditional things. (This, by the way, is a little different than when things like reading glasses and lists lose their places.) I am speaking of priorities that change. And the attitudes and behaviors that follow those changes.I see it in people who are having those milestone birthdays. You know, the ones with the zeros in them.There is a freedom that comes with zeros, but I think that with different people, that freedom arrives with different zeros. There?s a newly minted forty year old who recently stopped allowing her aging father to verbally abuse her and the soon-to-be seventy year old who no longer colors her hair. And speaking of hair, there?s a sixty year old who?s letting his hair grow long for the first time in decades. Other indicators might include the eighty-year-old who is finally unselfconscious enough to sing outside of the shower and the ninety year old who says whatever comes in to his mind.All of us are aging. But the zeros bring awareness?. Awareness that kindness is more important than politeness... that doing is more important than wanting.... and that the moment that matters most is this one.All of a sudden, it doesn?t much matter what anyone else wants for us. The fact that life spans are limited forces us to make decisions, to answer the question ?Who am I and what do I really want to do with my time??Security becomes less important than honesty.... and not telling someone that we love them looms as a far greater risk than if we do. What would you do if you knew that you only had six months to live? Where would you go? Who would you talk to? What would you say?Whether we have six months or another sixty years, maybe we should listen to the zeros.Lawrence Bienemann is a program coordinator for RSVP in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. As adults we know the positive health benefits that come with exercise and strength training. These exact same benefits can be applied to children as well.Building a safe and effective weight training routine for Sally is easier than one may think. The program should include the use of light free weights, an exercise for each muscle group, and a proper warm up and cool down. Let's not forget the ultimate goal of having fun!Kids love to run and jump all over the place. Encourage that playfulness while working on strength training programs as well. Be sure to focus on proper form and technique and not on physique or bulking up.Children you have not yet gone through puberty should not even consider adding lean muscle mass to their bodies. Save that goal for a later date. Just let your children have fun and experience strength training in a fun and positive environment.Check with your doctor before starting any exercise program. ***Arthritis -- Can It Be Prevented?*** Overview of Arthriti unimarter UniMarter
***Arthritis -- Can It Be Prevented?***

Overview of ArthritisEffective help is currently available for people to proactively manage arthritis and enjoy life to the fullest. But the actual prevention of arthritis itself is yet another story.With rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the membranes or tissues lining the joints become inflamed. There is no known way to prevent any form of this disease, including osteoarthritis, adult-onset arthritis and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. The exact causes of all these conditions are unknown.It's very important for people who fear they are at risk of rheumatoid arthritis to realize that at this time there are no medications to take or lifestyle modifications to make that can completely prevent this crippling disease. However, by making changes to your weight and diet and engaging in moderate exercise, you may be able to slow or even halt the disease's onset and progress.But you can only really take the measures needed to control arthritis after it is diagnosed. Until it is known for sure if certain bacteria or viruses trigger the disease, contact with people suffering from it will not change your risk of developing it.Traditionally, medications and physical therapy have been used to manage the disease. teksty massive amount of nutrient research has also shown the effect diet and supplements have on the body's healing processes. Lifestyle changes can also make a big difference.Causes of the DiseaseJoint injuries caused by accidents or overuse increase the occurrence of some types of arthritis. You can also inherit certain genes that may increase your risk. More research is needed to find out how to reduce the disease's onset from these factors.Some individuals have an inborn tendency to degenerative joint disease because they have changes in the structure of the important protein-building blocks of the articular cartilage which covers the surface of their joints. These seemingly small but significant abnormalities predispose their joints to wear and degeneration. In other cases, joint injuries may contribute to the development of DJD.No foods have been definitively shown to cause or exacerbate arthritis in most individuals. teksty variety of diets and "hand-me-down" information exists about certain foods and arthritis, in particular the night shade plants, but none of it has been proven.There is a rare form of arthritis called Spure which is caused by allergies to wheat products. Avoiding those will eliminate this disease. Associated features include weight loss, diarrhea and osteoporosis. Consult your health care provider if this is a concern.There are things you can do to reduce your risk for getting certain types of arthritis or to reduce disability if you already have arthritis.Overweight and obese people have a higher frequency of arthritis. Excess weight increases risk for developing osteoarthritis in the knees, and possibly in the hips and hands. Women are at special risk. In men, excess weight increases the risk for developing gout. ***Free Samples of Contact Lenses: Free Giveaways or Shameful Promotions?***

So, you are looking for free samples of contact lenses? Perhaps you saw a commercial that said "visit our website for a coupon to receive free samples of contact lenses." Or, "see your eye care provider today for your free pair of so and so lenses."While this a great way for lens manufacturers to have you try their brand of contact lenses, most contact lens fitters do not require such coupons.In order to get free samples of contact lenses, that particular lens must still be fit to your eye. Therefore you must still visit your eye care specialist. teksty properly fit soft contact lens must center correctly, move slightly with a blink, match the contour of your eye, and correct your vision. Any lens that does not meet all those minimum criteria does not fit. So why bother with some free samples of contact lenses that won't work for you?Here is a secret the other websites and commercial advertisements might not be telling you: You don't need a coupon to get free samples of contact lenses.If you are having issues with your current lenses, or have never worn lenses before, your specialist will fit you with something different. Depending on the type of fit, your lens fitter may have diagnostic lenses in the office for evaluation. If the diagnostic contact lenses are a good fit, chances are you can take them home to try out (yes, even without a coupon).There are some instances where free samples of contact lenses can not be handed out. For example, if you do not wear a pre-packaged, disposable contact lens. Non disposable lenses are not given to eye care providers as diagnostic tools and therefore will need to be ordered per case. Also, gas permeable contacts can not be given out as free samples. Every gas permeable contact lens is made per specs for an individual patient; therefore it would not be possible to have free samples on hand.So you can search out coupons for free samples of contact lenses, or you can let your specialist decide which lenses might be a better option for you.Steve Cogger helps thousands of contact lenses wearers find the perfect lens for their eyes. His busy New York practice specializes in all lens modalities. For more consumer information and education, visit the informative contact lens website.

***Cluster Headaches*** The headache is always unilateral, e unimarter UniMarter
***Cluster Headaches***

The headache is always unilateral, excruciating, and most uniquely, in timed attacks called "clusters." Cluster headaches are characterized by intense burning and boring pain, frequently located in or around one eye and temple and occasionally in one cheek or jaw. The affected eye is bloodshot and teary. The nostril on that side often becomes blocked and may run profusely. Other features can include reduced pupil size, a drooping eyelid and a flushed face. The pain swiftly intensifies within 5 to 10 minutes to a peak that typically persists for 30 minutes to 2 hours. Affected persons usually do not lie down during the attack because it usually worsens the pain. Cluster headaches have an abrupt onset and can happen at any time, but they most commonly occur two to three hours after falling asleep, usually during the phase of deep sleep known as rapid eye movement (REM). They usually last for less than two hours. The headaches can occur daily for days, weeks, or months before a remission period that can last weeks or years (episodic attacks), or can occur for a year or more without remission (chronic attacks). teksty chronic phase may begin after a period of episodic attacks.CausesThe cause of cluster headaches is unclear, but may relate to a vascular headache disorder or a disturbance of serotonin (a neurotransmitter or chemical in the brain). Unlike migraine headaches, which more often affect women, cluster headaches predominantly affect men. While the basic cause of cluster headache is not known, current research links the expanding of blood vessels in the head with chemically active proteins found in nerve endings around blood vessels of the trigeminal nerve (the fifth cranial nerve).SymptomsThe first attack most frequently arises during adolescence or the early 20s. Many patients report that alcohol triggers an attack. Others report that stress, glare, or ingestion of specific foods may trigger an attack. There is usually no family history of similar headaches. teksty typical cluster headache starts suddenly and without warning. In half of the cases, the attack awakens the patient within two hours of falling asleep. The attack may begin with a sensation of pressure in the eye or temple. The pain is unilateral, constant and severe. The excruciating pain reaches a peak within 15 minutes. Individual attacks usually last less than two hours. Towards the end of the attack, the patient may experience additional paroxysms of stabbing pain superimposed on the constant severe pain. In contrast to patients with migraine headaches, patients with cluster headaches are restless, active, and even violent during attacks. Most apply pressure or cold to the painful area, and many attempt to keep the head low but avoid lying down, since this position can initiate and increase cluster headache pain.DiagnosisThe physician should have little difficulty in diagnosing the condition. Nevertheless, some tests may be performed to exclude other ailments that cause similar pain; an aneurysm of the carotid artery in the head, a tumor made up of newly formed blood vessels, sinusitis, or glaucoma.TreatmentThe majority of patients with cluster headache can be controlled on medication. However, a small number of patients have a chronic form of cluster headache which is resistant to medical therapy and therefore very difficult to treat. Cluster headaches are resistant to analgesic painkillers because these drugs take effect slowly. Inhalation of 100 percent oxygen often provides relief. This may be the most effective treatment for frequent cluster headaches that occur primarily at night. Ergotamine tartrate in a suppository, tablet, injection, or aerosol form is an effective pain reliever for some people, but the dosage must be limited to avoid side effects, especially nausea. It may also be prescribed to prevent attacks.Sumatriptan (Imitrex) has been demonstrated to be effective in migraine headaches and in acute cluster headache attacks. It is given as a subcutaneous injection at the start of an attack. Corticosteroid medications, such as prednisone, may be prescribed if the cluster headaches are of recent onset or if there is a pattern of short attack episodes and long remissions. Side effects prohibit long-term use. About 60 percent of all persons with cluster headaches respond to methysergide maleate, which acts to relieve and prevent the attacks. It is used during periods of pain and is tapered off slowly during remission.Lithium carbonate can be effective during a chronic phase of cluster headaches; then the dosage is tapered to avoid side effects. Calcium channel blocking agents, such as verapamil, are effective for the prevention of cluster headaches in many people. Different types of surgery have been used over the years to treat chronic cluster headaches, but those which deaden the pain-sensitive cells of the fifth cranial nerve have worked best.Use of radiofrequency heating by means of a needle that deadens the trigeminal root nerve fibers may be effective, with fewer side effects than other invasive procedures. However, this therapy is usually used only after all other treatment has failed.QuestionsAre any other tests going to be performed to exclude other possible disorders causing the headaches? What is the cause of the headaches? What medication will you prescribe? What are the side effects? What impact can certain food and / or drinks have on these headaches? Will these episodes ever cease altogether? Are there any other measures that can be used to decrease the discomfort during an episode?Mike Freije Health Shop Owner

***Water...How It Effects Aging***

How many times have your heard ? drink eight to ten glasses of water everyday? How often do we actually drink that much pure water?Would you believe that as you are reading this page you are dehydrating? We were all born as grapes, but now we are turning into raisins. Your body was once more than 70% water and now, if you?re like most Americans past the age of 40, you are lucky to have a hydration level above 60%. The bodies of most hospitalized elderly are less than 50% water.Today, Americans consume more coffee and soft drinks than water. These beverages, along with tea and alcohol, are diuretics and dehydrate the body. All the moisturizer in the world will not restore a youthful appearance. By dehydrating your body you are actually pulling a hundred times as much water out of your skin through the urinary tract. Much worse than the skin dehydrating, is the dehydration of the internal organs, connective tissue and the brain.Inadequate fluid intake and excess water loss can disrupt critical cell function. Most people experience this level of hydration all day, nearly everyday. Water is essential for all anabolic repair functions, and conversely, dehydration accelerates the aging process.teksty study at Fred Hutchinson Research Center in Seattle found that women who drank two glasses of water a day had nearly twice the risk of colon cancer than women who drank four glasses a day. The few women who did drink eight or more glasses of water a day had less than half the risk of those who drank only four glasses. The association of increased water intake may also reduce the risk for other types of cancer. In one study, the women who drank the most water were 80% less likely to develop bladder cancer than women who drank the least. Other conditions that often respond to increased water intake include the reduction of headaches, muscle aches, hangovers, fatigue, constipation, and heartburn. Drinking enough water will also reduce fluid retention and edema. Sometimes it is difficult for people to understand that drinking lots of water actually decreases water retention. If you provide your body with ample amounts of pure water, it will not have to retain water in the tissues The body can become significantly dehydrated before we actually feel thirsty.In the morning, you have a true need for water, but you may not feel it. For most people, the first liquid they consume is coffee, a beverage that sucks the water out of our cells.Try this test: Before you eat or drink anything in the morning, sip about four ounces of water-no more. You will be surprised to see that in two to three minutes your mouth will feel parched. Drink another four ounces and in two to three minutes you will be thirsty again. You may have to repeat this six or more times before you are no longer thirsty. Add up all the four-ounce servings that you consumed, and you will discover your body?s true metabolic need for water.About The AuthorPaula Willard is a Certified Herbalist and has been working with Nutrition and Herbs for the past 20 years. ***The Functional Training Craze*** In the past few years I' unimarter UniMarter
***The Functional Training Craze***

In the past few years I've seen a huge transition in the fitness industry. More and more people are using functional training, and some argue it's the only way to train. The purpose of this article is to give people an understanding of what functional training is, and what it does and does not do.First, lets look at what functional actually means.Func.tion.al 1. capable of operating or functioning, 2. capable of serving the purpose for which it was intended (Webster's Encyclopedia 2nd Edition, 1996)Based on that definition, you can draw many conclusions as to what is functional. Depending upon who you ask, you will most likely get a diverse variety of responses as to what is functional. All human movement is a combination of various functions. Human movement cannot take place without muscular function. According to the functional training "experts", functional training uses bands, balls, free-weights, and plyometric exercises in an attempt to condition the body in an un-stable environment. Many of the experts feel that performing exercises that mimic activities or specific skills is the most effective way to train, regardless of ones goal.What is the safest, most efficient and effective way to optimize human performance?Factors Affecting Human PerformanceIn order to maximize human performance, you must have a good understanding of what affects performance. The factors that play the greatest role in performance are: Power (Strength and Speed), Agility (Flexibility / Mobility / Stability), Cardiovascular and Respiratory Conditioning, Sport Skill (Neuromuscular Coordination and Efficiency), and Genetic Potential.Let?s take a look at each factor and determine which training methods are going to deliver optimal results. By optimal results, I mean the greatest amount of improvement, with the least amount of risk, and in the shortest amount of time.PowerPower= Force x DistanceTimePower can be increased three ways.1. Increase Force (Strength)What is the most effective method of increasing strength and / or muscle tissue? In my opinion, High Intensity Strength Training is the most productive, safe, and time efficient approach available. I am not stating that one set of each exercise is the best choice. My definition of High Intensity Training is: training to momentary muscular failure, with brief and infrequent workouts in which all variables are prescribed based on the individuals: goals, age, current fitness level, fiber types, personal preference, and past experience.The purpose of strength training is to increase strength and lean body mass, NOT for training a specific skill or movement-that's called practice! People strength train for many reasons and there are many methods that work. For years, many trainers and coaches have had their clients and athletes perform Olympic lifts because they feel it will transfer over into the performance of their skill. Numerous studies have shown that the neurological transfer of skills is not optimal unless the skill is practiced EXACTLY as it is performed in competition. Therefore, performing power cleans because you play football is NOT optimal. Performing power-cleans will only get you better at performing power-cleans! Focus on increasing strength and lean body mass, and practice your skill exactly as it is performed during competition.2. Increase SpeedIncreasing the speed at which a skill is performed is another great way to improve power. Speed is primarily predetermined by the individual's genetic make up. However, that does not mean that you cannot improve speed by practicing the skill EXACTLY as it is performed in competition. teksty great deal of focus should be placed on perfecting the technique. By practicing the skill in this manner, you will improve neuromuscular efficiency, which will result in faster and more accurate performance.3. Increase Distance (flexibility / range of motion)Increasing flexibility is another way to improve power. By increasing flexibility, you increase the distance that force is applied which results in an increase in power.The safest and most effective method to increase flexibility is by performing full range of motion exercises and incorporating a sound stretching routine.AgilityImproving ones agility is another way of optimizing performance. Agility drills should be SPECIFIC to the activity or event. For example, having someone do Plyometric jumps off of boxes is NOT specific to someone who plays basketball! Yes, a basketball player jumps, but not off of boxes. Having the athlete practice jumping from the floor would be much more specific to their sport. Always ask yourself, ?What is the goal?? ?Is what I?m doing going to give me the outcome I desire?? ?Is it optimal??Cardiovascular and Respiratory ConditioningIncreasing cardio / respiratory output and endurance is another factor that has a major impact on performance. This topic is one of such importance that it is beyond the scope of this article. In general, if you increase the individual's cardiovascular and respiratory output and endurance, there will be a corresponding increase in performance. Cardiovascular training should also be specifically geared towards improving the individuals conditioning in the metabolic pathway in which they compete or perform. For example, someone who plays tennis should primarily train at a slow to moderate pace and incorporate bursts of high intensity effort. Interval training would be a good choice for this individual. Keep the training specific to the individual.Sport SkillThis is an area in which there is a lot of confusion among many athletes, coaches, and trainers. Skill acquisition and strength levels are two completely different things. Therefore, they should be trained separately, and with different methods. In order to optimize the performance of a specific skill or movement, it needs to be practiced EXACTLY as it is performed in competition. It has been shown that each activity or movement has it's own neuromuscular pathway, and that just because a movement is similar does NOT mean there will be a positive transfer or carryover of skill. In order to maximize performance the individual should attempt to perfect their movement or skill with endless hours of practice. The goal of practice should be to improve the technique, accuracy, and increase the speed at which the skill can be performed. This topic was addressed earlier in the section titled ?Increase Force.?Genetic PotentialThis is the factor that I have found to have the greatest impact on human performance. Genetic potential is something many people overlook. Regardless of what methods of training I use, I will never be a world-class marathoner. I can train twice a week or I can train 5 hours a day, it still won't change the fact that my body wasn't designed to excel at endurance activities. I hear of too many coaches and trainers having people follow dangerous training programs in an attempt to drastically improve their performance. This is not to say that you cannot improve performance. When training yourself or a competitive athlete, always set realistic goals. As stated earlier, the best thing to do is utilize the most effective methods available and work hard!Differences between Functional Training and Machine Based TrainingMost, if not all of the so-called functional exercises, fail to supply constant and variable resistance. Most quality machines supply constant tension and variable resistance based on the strength curve of the particular muscle, and track proper joint function.For example, compare dumbbell bicep curls on a Swiss ball to a bicep curl on a quality machine (such as Hammer Strength.) While performing the dumbbell curl, there is no tension on the biceps in the bottom or top positions. The resistance is greatest when the dumbbell is perpendicular to the floor. The amount of stimulus is also decreased due to the fact that the individual must balance his / her self on the ball. While using a machine, there is constant tension on the biceps and the amount of tension varies during the exercise based on the strength curve of the biceps muscle. Which is going to make the individual stronger? Which is going to stimulate more muscle fibers in the biceps?In my opinion, machine based training is by far superior if the goal is to increase strength, and / or muscle tissue. Keep in mind that more muscle equates to a faster, stronger, and better athlete, providing they practice their specific skill or movement.This is not to say that functional exercises serve no purpose. There are benefits to functional exercise; just not as many as some people are lead to believe. Exercise selection and the training methods used should be based on the individual's goals. Instances where functional training may be effective would be in individuals who need to improve balance, stability, and neuromuscular coordination. Below is a chart that shows the differences between Functional Training and Machine Based Training.Machine-Based TrainingFunctional TrainingProvides constant and variable resistanceMovement tracks proper joint functionEffectively overloads musculature (if used properly)Safer to performMany machines available to work every muscle in the bodyVery effective at improving balance, stability, and coordinationDoes NOT effectively overload musculatureDoes NOT provide optimal transfer of skill performanceVery difficult to measure and monitor progressHigher chance of injuryConclusionFunctional training obviously has some benefit, and can be a great addition to a well-designed strength program. However, I personally feel it should never take the place of a structured strength training routine. I recommend using a combination approach, which utilizes machines, free-weights, bodyweight, balls, bands, and anything that is going to deliver the desired results. Always remember that training for strength and / or increases in muscle tissue and training for skill are two completely different things. When designing or assessing a training program the following questions should be asked. What is the goal? Is it time efficient? Is it safe? Is it delivering the desired results? Is it optimal?ReferencesSchmidt, R. teksty : Motor Learning and Performance -From Principles to Practice. ***Fight Bad Breath: Halitosis***

Ever being kept at an arm's length by your friend? If yes, then there is high possibility that you are suffering from chronic Halitosis. Millions of us suffer from the same. Suffering from Halitosis is like giving nightmares to your girlfriend and the worst part is you don't even have a clue about it until a very close friend comes up to and tells you about it. Embarrassing? Yeah it can really make you feel like an alien in a group.The root cause of Halitosis (Bad Breath)Generally, bad breath originates from gums and tongue. It can also take birth from stomach but its very unlikely. The bacteria from the decay of food particles is mainly responsible for the abhorrent smell. Other reasons can be poor oral hygiene or the debris left in the mouth. This decay process produces a sulphur compound which produces the unpleasant odour.How to keep a check on bad breath?. If in some dilemma or confusion about bad breath, ask a close friend of yours.. Keep rinsing your mouth after your meals. This a temporary solution and works at times.. Cut down spicy food. Spicy food also adds to the cause and increase the unpleasant odour.. Brush your teeth when you wake up in the morning and before you go to bed in night. Brushing should include tongue and cheeks too.. Drinking fluids is also a smart solution.. Don't eat tobacco products at any cost. Tobacco smoke produces substances like nicotine, tar etc which accumulates on a person's teeth which not only produces unpleasant odour but also a very ugly look. Drink less alcohol too.. Use good toothpaste which neutralize sulphur compounds and have anti-bacterial properties.. Do not skip your breakfast. Missing your breakfast may allow bacteria to re-appear.. Visit your dentist if the problem still remains. Get your mouth cleaned by getting rid of plaque and bacteria that grows on your teeth very frequently.What are the factors causing bad breath?. Chewing of tobacco and excessive smoking. As explained above, tar and nicotine produces bad odour.. Food which you eat can also produce bad breath. Spicy and protein rich food in particular account for it.. Poor oral hygiene. Several health conditions like diabetes, sinusitis, kidney failure etc can also lead to bad breath.. Use of dentures, braces which are not cleaned properly.. Xerostomia can also bring bad breath along with it. Saliva in our mouth helps to cleanse bacteria. Xerostomia makes mouth dry as the amount of saliva reduces. This encourages bad breath.. Even hormonal changes can have a bad effect on your breath. So can dieting and age.teksty self test for bad breathLick your wrist and wait for five seconds to allow the wrist to dry up. Now smell it. Is it foul? If no, then you don't suffer from bad breath.About the AuthorJasdeep SinghFor http: / / weightloss-health.com / your complete and most comprehensive family guide on Health.Also get free tips and tricks on weight loss and a chance to go through other informative articles targeting various health issues at http: / / weightloss-health.com / Articles.htmIf you wish to reproduce the above article you are welcome to do so, provided the article is reproduced in its entirety, including this resource box and LIVE link to our website.

***Showering: Is Your Health at Risk?*** For the past decade unimarter UniMarter
***Showering: Is Your Health at Risk?***

For the past decade, people have focused on the importance of clean drinking water. Purified drinking water reduces or eliminates chemicals found in normal tap water. However,the body derives its need for water from alternative sources, most notably while showering.It is common practice in North America to shower on a daily basis, sometimes more than once. Unfortunately, most people are unaware that more chlorine is absorbed through the skin during the average shower than by drinking six to eight glasses of tap water. This may make one wonder,how clean is shower water?Are you a fan of hot showers?Since the skin is porous, it is the body's way of excreting toxins and regulating temperature, hot showers cause the pores of the skin to dilate, allowing chlorine and other free radicals to be rapidly absorbed. Chlorine is also contained within the water vapor that enters the air as steam, and which we breathe into our lungs as we shower. Dr. Halina Brown, a professor of water chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh, claims that the exposure to vaporized chemicals in water supplied through showering,bathing and inhalation is 100 times greater than through drinking the water.Furthermore, chlorine and other water contaminants reduce the effectiveness of many shampoos, conditioners, lotions, oils and skin creams, leaving your skin dry and unnourished.Any contact the body has with water is cause for concern. Swimming pools and hot tubs use chlorine to kill bacteria. Little thought is given to the effect on the human body. Chlorine is a highly toxic element, which has the ability to denature protein. All living organisms are made up of protein; thus any living organism that comes in contact with sufficient quantities of chlorine is killed. After swimming or showering you may notice that you have sore eyes, sinus blockage, respiratory problems (such as asthma), cracking skin (hands and feet), or dry hair and an itchy scalp. You may also feel tired and your skin might smell of chlorine for hours afterwards, even after showering.What is your health worth?The May 2003 issue of Elle Magazine, featured a showerhead that has a carbon filter that removes chlorine as well as other toxic substances in our water like lead, iron oxides and other sediments that leave dulling deposits on the hair. If the showerhead removes the minerals that cause this dulling effect, one might notice an increase in shine and hydration. This is something you may want to consider when comparing showerheads and filters.Here?s to your health.Peter McGarryAbout The AuthorFor additional free information on health issues regarding air, water, fitness, nutrition and sleep, please visit www.magneticrevolution.com. ***Is Modern Life Hurting Your Health?*** How often have you unimarter UniMarter
***Is Modern Life Hurting Your Health?***

How often have you said to yourself, "I wish things would slow down"? "I wish life was simpler!"Modern life can be taxing. Today we live faster, work more, and have less free time than ever before. In addition, our 'conveniences' often come at the expense of the purity of our environment.It's no wonder we are the 'stress generation'. Did you know that you hear more news in one DAY that your great-grandparents heard in an entire year? One day!Combine the stress caused by too much information with the changes in our environment and the food we eat and you end up with a losing combination.What can we do to fight back against the unseen environmental factors that rob us of our health and peace of mind?Plenty!Here are the top three environmental factors that have a negative impact on your life and what you can do about each.1. Air pollutionThis problem can sneak into your home or office without you even noticing. And the problem is very real. From airborne pollutants to toxic mold, our breathing is under attack.Many cities now routinely warn citizens to stay indoors during certain parts of the day, particularly in the summer, due to elevated ozone levels. Of course, summer is the time when our children and we often want to be outdoors.The good news is that this is a problem with several solutions. Today we have a wide variety of air filters from which to choose. Ranging from those that simply filter our air to more expensive models that 'treat' the air, be sure you get a filter that traps super-small particles and defends against ozone as well. And change your filter often. Experts now recommend changing filters up to once a week.You may not be able to change the air outside but you can make a difference in the air your family breaths when they are in your home.2. Water pollution.If you remember high-school science, you will remember that there is no new water. That's right, the water you drank today is completely re-circulated from the clouds above. Makes air pollution take on a completely new meaning, doesn't it?Water is essential to life. When NASA speaks about the possibility of life existing on Mars or any other planet, what they look for is whether that planet has or has ever had water. The majority of the human body is made of water. We cannot live without it.Like our air, our water is polluted with chemicals and toxins from various sources in the environment.Thankfully, water filtration is sophisticated. Having an effective home water filtration system is within the reach of virtually everyone.Whether you choose a 'whole house' filter or one that runs from the faucet, be sure that the particle size that it filters is sufficiently small. Look specifically to see that your filter will remove contaminants like lead, mercury, and asbestos.3. Chemical ResidueIf our air and water are both polluted, where does that leave our homes? By cleaning up the air we breath and the water we drink, we are on the road to providing a safer environment for our families. However, we're not there yet.Every surface in our home collects dust, dirt, germs, and grease that need cleaning regularly. That's no problem, you say! You can just pick up your handy dandy bottle of all-purpose chemical cleaner and begin, wait, did you say chemical cleaner?We filter chemicals out of our air and water and then put them right back into our home environment by cleaning every surface in our home with chemical cleaners, exposing our families to their vapors in the process.Modern advancements come to the rescue in the area of cleaning as well. For the first time, we have easy access to methods of cleaning that will do a great job without bringing us the chemicals and toxins that we don't want.In each area of household cleaning you undertake, be sure to choose products that won't leave a chemical residue or strong chemical odors in the air. Your health and your lungs will thank you.By making a few simple changes, you can have a permanent impact on your life and the lives of your family members. Why not start today? Take back your peace of mind and begin the journey to happier and healthier lives.About The AuthorRick Mills is an independent consultant that promotes safe alternatives to environmental factors that have an adverse effect on our health. http: / / healthfocus.smartlivingnews.com; healthfocus@direcway.com
