Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is an acquired vision disorder and, together with cataracts, a leading cause of legal blindness in the over 60s. Since AMD affects the central part of the retina (macula), which is responsible for acuity of vision, many activities, including reading, writing, sports and driving can become extremely difficult tasks for sufferers to perform.What part, then, can nutrition play in relation to this eye disease? Given that approximately 10 million Americans suffer from early onset AMD and half-a-million from significant loss of vision due to late-stage AMD, the question is an urgent one. The disease's severity and irreversibility adds to the urgency.Research has suggested that AMD develops with the reduction of pigment in the macula. This retinal layer plays a dual role: it filters out harmful blue wavelengths of light and mops up free radicals found in large concentrations in this area. Free radicals damage the cell membranes and the macular pigment.The theory goes that nutrition, in particular certain antioxidant compounds, can reduce the harmful effects of free radicals and, as a consequence, may act to slow the progression of AMD. teksty recent large clinical trial conducted by the National Eye Institute (NEI) supports this theory.Let's examine its methods and findings. The effect of a high dose antioxidant, vitamin combination (C & teksty) plus zinc, was tested on participating patients with advanced signs and symptoms of AMD. For this high-risk group of patients it was found that the supplement reduced the risk of developing advanced AMD by about one-quarter and reduced vision loss by about one-fifth.The NEI concluded that, for people over the age of 55 who display signs of intermediate to late vision loss due to AMD, taking a high-dose vitamin combination plus zinc similar to that used in the clinical trial, is highly desirable. 300,000 people at high risk from AMD- associated vision loss would benefit from the treatment. It has indeed proven to be an effective means of limiting the disease in patients with advanced signs and symptoms of AMD.Given this positive association between nutrition and AMD, it is interesting and helpful to compare the levels of Vitamin C and teksty provided by eating five daily servings of nuts and seeds, with the dosage taken in the trial.Choosing pigment-rich fruits and vegetables (oranges, strawberries, green peppers, broccoli) can provide more than 100 mg. Vitamin C daily. Two daily servings of nuts and seeds (almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds) can provide 8-14 mg. Vitamin teksty (11.9-20.8 IU).The above recommended dietary allowances (RDA), however, fall well short of the levels associated with health benefits to vision (see doses above) illustrated by the WEI's Age-Related Eye Disease Study. This is not to say, though, that good food sources of antioxidants should be overlooked in favor of supplements: the bowels and colon benefit from the anti-carcinogenic properties of fiber-rich foods.The wisest option for those who display early signs of AMD, have a genetic predisposion for the disease and are over 50, is to eat a healthy diet and supplement this with good-quality, organically-sourced nutrients.Such a dietary regime is vitally important when put into the context of current average intake. Over half of Americans get much less than 100% of their Vitamin C RDA from their diet and more than 90%, less than 100% of their Vitamin teksty RDA.Finally, it is important to emphasise that the use of good nutrition based on high levels of antioxidants cannot turn back the clock and reverse the damage already caused by AMD. You know, the ones with the zeros in them.There is a freedom that comes with zeros, but I think that with different people, that freedom arrives with different zeros. There?s a newly minted forty year old who recently stopped allowing her aging father to verbally abuse her and the soon-to-be seventy year old who no longer colors her hair. And speaking of hair, there?s a sixty year old who?s letting his hair grow long for the first time in decades. Other indicators might include the eighty-year-old who is finally unselfconscious enough to sing outside of the shower and the ninety year old who says whatever comes in to his mind.All of us are aging. But the zeros bring awareness?. Awareness that kindness is more important than politeness... that doing is more important than wanting.... and that the moment that matters most is this one.All of a sudden, it doesn?t much matter what anyone else wants for us. The headache is always unilateral, excruciating, and most uniquely, in timed attacks called "clusters." Cluster headaches are characterized by intense burning and boring pain, frequently located in or around one eye and temple and occasionally in one cheek or jaw. The affected eye is bloodshot and teary. The nostril on that side often becomes blocked and may run profusely. Other features can include reduced pupil size, a drooping eyelid and a flushed face. The pain swiftly intensifies within 5 to 10 minutes to a peak that typically persists for 30 minutes to 2 hours. Affected persons usually do not lie down during the attack because it usually worsens the pain. Cluster headaches have an abrupt onset and can happen at any time, but they most commonly occur two to three hours after falling asleep, usually during the phase of deep sleep known as rapid eye movement (REM). They usually last for less than two hours. The headaches can occur daily for days, weeks, or months before a remission period that can last weeks or years (episodic attacks), or can occur for a year or more without remission (chronic attacks). teksty chronic phase may begin after a period of episodic attacks.CausesThe cause of cluster headaches is unclear, but may relate to a vascular headache disorder or a disturbance of serotonin (a neurotransmitter or chemical in the brain). Nevertheless, some tests may be performed to exclude other ailments that cause similar pain; an aneurysm of the carotid artery in the head, a tumor made up of newly formed blood vessels, sinusitis, or glaucoma.TreatmentThe majority of patients with cluster headache can be controlled on medication. However, a small number of patients have a chronic form of cluster headache which is resistant to medical therapy and therefore very difficult to treat. Cluster headaches are resistant to analgesic painkillers because these drugs take effect slowly. Inhalation of 100 percent oxygen often provides relief. This may be the most effective treatment for frequent cluster headaches that occur primarily at night. Ergotamine tartrate in a suppository, tablet, injection, or aerosol form is an effective pain reliever for some people, but the dosage must be limited to avoid side effects, especially nausea. It may also be prescribed to prevent attacks.Sumatriptan (Imitrex) has been demonstrated to be effective in migraine headaches and in acute cluster headache attacks. It is given as a subcutaneous injection at the start of an attack. Corticosteroid medications, such as prednisone, may be prescribed if the cluster headaches are of recent onset or if there is a pattern of short attack episodes and long remissions. Side effects prohibit long-term use. About 60 percent of all persons with cluster headaches respond to methysergide maleate, which acts to relieve and prevent the attacks. It is used during periods of pain and is tapered off slowly during remission.Lithium carbonate can be effective during a chronic phase of cluster headaches; then the dosage is tapered to avoid side effects. Calcium channel blocking agents, such as verapamil, are effective for the prevention of cluster headaches in many people. Different types of surgery have been used over the years to treat chronic cluster headaches, but those which deaden the pain-sensitive cells of the fifth cranial nerve have worked best.Use of radiofrequency heating by means of a needle that deadens the trigeminal root nerve fibers may be effective, with fewer side effects than other invasive procedures. Most people experience this level of hydration all day, nearly everyday. Drinking enough water will also reduce fluid retention and edema. Sometimes it is difficult for people to understand that drinking lots of water actually decreases water retention. If you provide your body with ample amounts of pure water, it will not have to retain water in the tissues The body can become significantly dehydrated before we actually feel thirsty.In the morning, you have a true need for water, but you may not feel it. For most people, the first liquid they consume is coffee, a beverage that sucks the water out of our cells.Try this test: Before you eat or drink anything in the morning, sip about four ounces of water-no more. You will be surprised to see that in two to three minutes your mouth will feel parched. Drink another four ounces and in two to three minutes you will be thirsty again. You may have to repeat this six or more times before you are no longer thirsty. Depending upon who you ask, you will most likely get a diverse variety of responses as to what is functional. All human movement is a combination of various functions. Human movement cannot take place without muscular function. According to the functional training "experts", functional training uses bands, balls, free-weights, and plyometric exercises in an attempt to condition the body in an un-stable environment. Many of the experts feel that performing exercises that mimic activities or specific skills is the most effective way to train, regardless of ones goal.What is the safest, most efficient and effective way to optimize human performance?Factors Affecting Human PerformanceIn order to maximize human performance, you must have a good understanding of what affects performance. The factors that play the greatest role in performance are: Power (Strength and Speed), Agility (Flexibility / Mobility / Stability), Cardiovascular and Respiratory Conditioning, Sport Skill (Neuromuscular Coordination and Efficiency), and Genetic Potential.Let?s take a look at each factor and determine which training methods are going to deliver optimal results. By optimal results, I mean the greatest amount of improvement, with the least amount of risk, and in the shortest amount of time.PowerPower= Force x DistanceTimePower can be increased three ways.1. Increase Force (Strength)What is the most effective method of increasing strength and / or muscle tissue? In my opinion, High Intensity Strength Training is the most productive, safe, and time efficient approach available. I am not stating that one set of each exercise is the best choice. My definition of High Intensity Training is: training to momentary muscular failure, with brief and infrequent workouts in which all variables are prescribed based on the individuals: goals, age, current fitness level, fiber types, personal preference, and past experience.The purpose of strength training is to increase strength and lean body mass, NOT for training a specific skill or movement-that's called practice! People strength train for many reasons and there are many methods that work. For years, many trainers and coaches have had their clients and athletes perform Olympic lifts because they feel it will transfer over into the performance of their skill. Numerous studies have shown that the neurological transfer of skills is not optimal unless the skill is practiced EXACTLY as it is performed in competition. Therefore, performing power cleans because you play football is NOT optimal. Performing power-cleans will only get you better at performing power-cleans! Focus on increasing strength and lean body mass, and practice your skill exactly as it is performed during competition.2. Increase SpeedIncreasing the speed at which a skill is performed is another great way to improve power. Speed is primarily predetermined by the individual's genetic make up. However, that does not mean that you cannot improve speed by practicing the skill EXACTLY as it is performed in competition. teksty great deal of focus should be placed on perfecting the technique. By practicing the skill in this manner, you will improve neuromuscular efficiency, which will result in faster and more accurate performance.3. Increase Distance (flexibility / range of motion)Increasing flexibility is another way to improve power. By increasing flexibility, you increase the distance that force is applied which results in an increase in power.The safest and most effective method to increase flexibility is by performing full range of motion exercises and incorporating a sound stretching routine.AgilityImproving ones agility is another way of optimizing performance. Agility drills should be SPECIFIC to the activity or event. For example, having someone do Plyometric jumps off of boxes is NOT specific to someone who plays basketball! Yes, a basketball player jumps, but not off of boxes. Having the athlete practice jumping from the floor would be much more specific to their sport. Always ask yourself, ?What is the goal?? ?Is what I?m doing going to give me the outcome I desire?? ?Is it optimal??Cardiovascular and Respiratory ConditioningIncreasing cardio / respiratory output and endurance is another factor that has a major impact on performance. This topic is one of such importance that it is beyond the scope of this article. In general, if you increase the individual's cardiovascular and respiratory output and endurance, there will be a corresponding increase in performance. Cardiovascular training should also be specifically geared towards improving the individuals conditioning in the metabolic pathway in which they compete or perform. For example, someone who plays tennis should primarily train at a slow to moderate pace and incorporate bursts of high intensity effort. Interval training would be a good choice for this individual. Keep the training specific to the individual.Sport SkillThis is an area in which there is a lot of confusion among many athletes, coaches, and trainers. Skill acquisition and strength levels are two completely different things. Therefore, they should be trained separately, and with different methods. In order to optimize the performance of a specific skill or movement, it needs to be practiced EXACTLY as it is performed in competition. It has been shown that each activity or movement has it's own neuromuscular pathway, and that just because a movement is similar does NOT mean there will be a positive transfer or carryover of skill. In order to maximize performance the individual should attempt to perfect their movement or skill with endless hours of practice. The goal of practice should be to improve the technique, accuracy, and increase the speed at which the skill can be performed. This topic was addressed earlier in the section titled ?Increase Force.?Genetic PotentialThis is the factor that I have found to have the greatest impact on human performance. Genetic potential is something many people overlook. Regardless of what methods of training I use, I will never be a world-class marathoner. I can train twice a week or I can train 5 hours a day, it still won't change the fact that my body wasn't designed to excel at endurance activities. I hear of too many coaches and trainers having people follow dangerous training programs in an attempt to drastically improve their performance. This is not to say that you cannot improve performance. When training yourself or a competitive athlete, always set realistic goals. As stated earlier, the best thing to do is utilize the most effective methods available and work hard!Differences between Functional Training and Machine Based TrainingMost, if not all of the so-called functional exercises, fail to supply constant and variable resistance. Most quality machines supply constant tension and variable resistance based on the strength curve of the particular muscle, and track proper joint function.For example, compare dumbbell bicep curls on a Swiss ball to a bicep curl on a quality machine (such as Hammer Strength.) While performing the dumbbell curl, there is no tension on the biceps in the bottom or top positions. The resistance is greatest when the dumbbell is perpendicular to the floor. The amount of stimulus is also decreased due to the fact that the individual must balance his / her self on the ball. While using a machine, there is constant tension on the biceps and the amount of tension varies during the exercise based on the strength curve of the biceps muscle. Which is going to make the individual stronger? Which is going to stimulate more muscle fibers in the biceps?In my opinion, machine based training is by far superior if the goal is to increase strength, and / or muscle tissue. Keep in mind that more muscle equates to a faster, stronger, and better athlete, providing they practice their specific skill or movement.This is not to say that functional exercises serve no purpose. There are benefits to functional exercise; just not as many as some people are lead to believe. Exercise selection and the training methods used should be based on the individual's goals. Instances where functional training may be effective would be in individuals who need to improve balance, stability, and neuromuscular coordination. However, I personally feel it should never take the place of a structured strength training routine. I recommend using a combination approach, which utilizes machines, free-weights, bodyweight, balls, bands, and anything that is going to deliver the desired results. Always remember that training for strength and / or increases in muscle tissue and training for skill are two completely different things. When designing or assessing a training program the following questions should be asked. What is the goal? Is it time efficient? Is it safe? Is it delivering the desired results?
