It is generally accepted amongst most marketing experts that it costs at least five times more to acquire a new customer than it does to get an order from an existing customer. There are many ways that you can unlock the value of your existing customer base and in this article, I will explore some of those ways with you.The first thing a business needs to do is develop the mindset that their customer base is their most valuable asset. Customers need to be treated like gold because that is what they are to your business. Responding to the needs of your existing customers must take priority over prospecting for new customers.To unlock the value of your customers requires that you have a range of products that will fulfil their needs. Products should be carefully chosen to ensure they are of the right quality and will meet customer needs. Your customers will often tell you what they need if you listen to them carefully and with respect. This can save you a lot of time and cost in market testing of new products.Stay in contact with your customers. There are a variety of ways to do this and the Internet provides a cost effective means to do so. A regular newsletter for customers providing them with useful information is the most common way. However, you need to know what your customers want to make this truly effective.Gather the preferences of your customers and monitor their buying habits. This can provide you with very valuable information. To get valuable ideas, look at some of the things Amazon does. They also have a facility that suggests other titles or products you may be interested in. This is based on what you are considering purchasing and what others who purchased the same item also purchased.Do these features generate more sales from their existing customers? You bet they do! How can you use these concepts to unlock the value of your customers?Consider ways that you can make it easy for your customers to re-order. Simple things such as not having to fill in all their details again on the order form help. That way, customers only need to advise you of changes to their details and the order process is a lot quicker.Regularly review your customers' buying habits. This can reveal information on offers that you can make that meet their needs. Providing them with a solution to their problem will lead not only to further sales but also strong goodwill.Customer service can be one of your strongest weapons in the battle to retain your customers. Make every effort to personalise responses to customer enquiries. Do not send standard form emails if you can avoid it. While this will take more time, the rewards will be far greater.Be quick to honour guarantees. This will show that you mean what you say and will build strong credibility. Too often, tardiness and slow responses lead to lost credibility and lost future value of a customer. I know some of you are thinking... duh! But, I have been working from home for about 7 years and it still amazes me how many companies slack on their Customer Service duties. I have worked for a few Direct Sales companies as well as owing my own business. I still have much to learn about running a business, but I do know that you have to please your customer in order for them to return. Of all the Direct Sales companies I’ve been with, the main problem seems to be slow shipping. Of course, it depends on what is being sold. However, when a customer has to wait over a month for the products they’ve ordered, it is almost guaranteed that they will not order again. An example is Soy Candles. This type of candles has to have time to cure unlike paraffin candles. Therefore, it could take at least two weeks before they are ready to be shipped out. Or if you are selling handmade items it could take a while to complete the item if it is not pre-made. The first thing you should do for your customers is to let them know a time frame as to when they should expect to receive their items.Another thing you must remember is that the customer is always right. If they are not happy with their purchase and customer service they will not recommend you to another potential customer. If you ship an item that is broken, missing, not received, etc. you must take care of the problem promptly. The first thing I would do is offer to replace the item. If they would like a refund, by all means, refund their money. You can even offer them some type of discount or free item to help build their trust.When a customer places an order you should always write them a little note to thank them for their order and to let them know that you will notify them when their item(s) have been shipped. When you ship items with USPS always get a Delivery Confirmation number just in case the item does get lost. This way you can contact the Post Office to figure out where your package went. Forward the Confirmation number to your customer. If you use UPS or any other shipping company that has some sort of tracking, always forward that information to your customer also. Or at least give them an exact date that their item will be delivered (if shipping via UPS). Never say an item was shipped on a certain day when you didn’t ship it.If there is a delay in shipping their products, notify the customer. It is always best to keep the customer updated on the progress rather than have them sit and wonder what is going on.The most important thing to remember when it comes to Customer Service is to be honest, trustworthy and upfront. Communication is key. You want to gain the trust of your customer in order for them to return and to recommend your business to others. Customer service is everything to a business. Just look at big, successful retail chains: They let you return perfectly good merchandise just because you changed your mind. Is that insane? Yes, pretty much, but it's also good customer service, and it's a good investment, and the "secret" of success, for a lot of big companies.Let's turn to the Internet. I find that the vast majority of companies selling things on the Net can't be contacted at all. Not presale, postsale, or anywhere in between. The only time they talk to you is if you get really angry and start complaining. Everyone else is apparently seen by customer service, but ignored.Even if you're using an autoresponder to handle 99% of your customers automatically, the least you can do is try to personalize the messages based on whatever meager information they've given you. While I'm at it, what's wrong with allowing people to contact you on the phone if they're getting frustrated? Does this increase or decrease the chances that a person will develop a vendetta against you and your company? I think the answer is obvious.Most Internet companies simply do not offer personalized service. It might sound like a contradiction, but I believe in both automation and service. Some people want to call someone on the phone before they sign up for anything online. Customers beware: The biggest, most respectable companies on the Internet are even harder to talk to than your phone company. Small scam-based companies are extremely likely to have a toll-free number.Sole proprietors like me don't want to get phone calls all the time, so I don't show you my phone number. Of course I have a phone number that you can call, but you have to commit a little bit of effort to get it. First, send me an email with your question or complaint, and explain why it would be easier to talk to me on the phone about it. Give me your number and I'll call you. If you're afraid to give me your number, ask me for mine and I'll probably give it to you, if you don't sound like a crazy person. You can also talk to me on AOL Instant Messenger, which is a free download with only a little bit of adware/spyware. (I hate AOL in general, but AIM is less of a spam magnet than ICQ.) Just get my contact info from the little "contact" link on this page.I mentioned that you can make autoresponder messages personal; In fact, personal enough that some people think you're sitting there typing them in and hitting the "send" button. This can only be done by acquiring extra information from the customer. The type of information depends on what your mailing list is about. In the case of my mailing list, this information mainly involves Internet, business, and general computer experience.If you're currently on my mailing list and don't remember giving me this information, perhaps I obtained it subtly or just haven't asked you for it yet. I know it might sound scammy, but this truly is the best way to take care of the needs of the customer with the limited amount of time available to a small Internet business.Let's think about it from another angle. My phone company is making tons of money from me, and It takes me an hour to get on the phone with them. They have a nice Web site to take care of most of my concerns, so they don't have to hire as many customer service reps. This is a win/win for everyone, except that this same phone company fires so many reps that my phone experience returns to normal, i.e. unacceptable.Compare this to someone like me. I work alone, and I don't have a long queue of phone calls at any given moment. I get a lot of emails, most of which are spam, but I know how to handle that. When I get an email from someone who is actually interested in Online Honesty, I'm pretty excited, and I make it my #1 priority to solve whatever problem this person has, even if they're not remotely interested in buying anything from me. I might be on vacation or something, so I might not be reachable by phone for a week. I can, however, read my email several times a day no matter where I am.It's a matter of respect. I try to respect people, no matter who they are (sometimes unsuccessfully, but I try). If they just want advice, I'll do it for free. Give people respect, and they respect you in return. You don't have to buy anything from me. Just tell your friends, if they're looking to do business online, that I seem like an honest person and I know certain things about business and the Internet. That's all I ask.I recently heard the term "karmic marketing". I guess that's what I've been trying to do: Make people happy first, then worry about money later. This is possibly the safest kind of marketing in terms of legality, though probably not the best way to make fast money. We needed more money. That was an accepted fact. We were both retired and the cost of the insurance AND the co-pays on the medications was overwhelming us. The rent keeps going up as well as the cable (with our internet connections) and everything else was too. Now, gas is costing $3+ per gallon! Yup! We needed more money coming in. So I decided to see if I could do ‘something’ on the internet.My first adventure was ‘surveys’. That went over about as well as a frog in a flight suit! I would fill them out and click submit and the only things I got was a sweepstakes entry or a ‘promise’ of money. This just wasn’t working! I even sent emails to one of the survey companies. I had racked up over $500 in surveys and only received $130 - where is the rest? No response AND no more money. I had to find something else. I had submitted thousands of surveys and all I got was a lousy $130 bucks!!!The second adventure started with an ad from an internet marketer. He would build me a website and set it up with an automatic advertising system for 400 days...WOW! I bit like a starving man in a pastry shop. I followed his instruction in the lessons he sent and was feeling very good about myself, BUT again, no money! **I should note here that the site looks fantastic. Of course, this put my name out there as ‘new meat’ and the sharks came fast and furious. I was amazed (I didn’t see them as sharks then). Every time one would offer a free site, free subscription, free trial, free anything I would jump and run. After I got into most of them ... the “you need this program to make the maximum money” or “you need that program for this one to run properly” popped up - so THIS was what the old ‘bait & switch’ was all about. Well, to make a long story short ... I sucker’d for almost every one of them. Thousands of dollars worth. Yes, you guessed it - STILL NO MONEY! But I had lots of programs, articles, information, directions, and plans that were supposed to solve my hopes, prayers, aspirations, desperation.As you would guess, the end finally came ... no more money-charge cards maxed out and I was against the wall. The firing squad was lining up, what a time to quit smoking! While I sat in front of the computer looking at the massive collection of information I had accumulated, an email popped up - I absentmindedly opened the email and started to read. Oh, this one sounded good. It seems I never learn, I guess. Now I'm buried in content and don't know what to do with it!The moral to this dismal story is NOT to stop looking for that one golden opportunity but to be very watchful in HOW you are doing it. Take it slow and easy, consider each one carefully and read, read, read and research ad naseum. Slow down and take it one step at a time. Taking a ‘FREE trial run’ first is a great idea. Then, when you get inside, you can look around for the pools of quicksand that will suck you under faster than ‘Click Here’. When you find something you like and it increases your heart rate...do it. As you are downloading the program, and later downloading the free gifts and bonuses put them all into a separate folder with the name of the program. Keep them organized and when you want to go back and review, it will be an easy task. Yup! You guessed it - mine aren’t! I probably have $20-$30,000 in information that looks like a pile of pick-up-sticks. They all have labels but no organization.I firmly believe that if I had gone slower and READ THE INFORMATION I downloaded a lot things would have been different. I’m like a starving man with no arms in the middle of a glorious feast! Sad but true.Come to think of it...Oh God! Another light bulb...I ‘could’ probably take a couple of long days and organize all of them and SELL THEM. I have Master resell rights for most of them. Sh_t! Here we go again...Sometimes I think I am a split personality and the other half is an evil twin! At any rate, if you have stuck with me thru this article - GOOD LUCK in your efforts. I remember when I began my first business. There were just not enough hours in the day. And this was true for each of the 7 days of the week. My daughter was only 3 months old when I started that business. I was not working outside of the home.I was now looking at needing time to be a mom to my newborn daughter, be a daughter to my two wonderful parents, be a wife to my husband, take care of the household and now run a business.Unfortunately, as is often the case, my business was the only entity not suffering from time neglect. I was working 80 to 100 hours per week on this business. I seldom spoke to friends. I was constantly saying no to social invitations. My husband and I were fast becoming strangers. I was also missing out on quality time with my daughter as her dad took over bath time, bed time and even weekend time.Then I discovered day planners. I was now scheduling everything. By using a day planner I discovered I actually had time to say yes to some of those social invitations. I had time to visit with my parents at least once a week. I had time to spend with my husband and I took back some nights with my daughter, bathing her and putting her to bed at night.This day planner worked wonderfully all through my next pregnancy and the years that followed. I was able to volunteer at school, go on field trips and still run a successful business.I remember when my daughter was a teenager, she knew the rules. “If you want me there, you need to put it into my day planner”. I recall she and I battled one day as she felt it was silly for a teenager to have to schedule time with mom. She was right that it does sound silly, however if she wanted me at her school, if she needed me to drive carpool, if she wanted me to attend a meeting, or even if she wanted to schedule in a lunch, if she wrote it in my day planner, it was going to happen. She began really hearing her friend’s complaints of moms who worked too much, had too many meetings and had no time for their daughters. These moms did not use day planners like I did. These women were not being able to find time to give to their daughters. I was often driving their children to events as they couldn’t find the time.I scheduled my business time too. I knew which days/hours were going to be spent marketing, talking with customers, talking with team members etc. When you keep track of your time in writing, in a day planner, it is so much easier to fit it all in. I scheduled several times per day to check email and return phone calls. It truly is easier to answer 5 calls back to back versus stopping what you’re doing to answer the phone 5 different times.One area that was troubling to me was reading. I had a huge list of books that had been recommended to me and yet I was not finding the time to read them. One mentor said “can you find 10 minutes per day?” I laughed. “I’m the queen of day planners, or course I can find 10 minutes a day, why?” He went on to explain that 10 minutes per day reading came out to over an hour per week, over 4 hours per month. He felt quite confident that spending just 10 minutes per day would have me finishing about one book per month. This was so easy to schedule in. I left home 10 minutes early to pick my daughter up from school. I spent those 10 extra minutes either in the car reading, or I’d sit on the grass when the weather was nice and use those 10 minutes to read. I began getting through that list of books and loved what I was learning.My kids are both older now. In Today’s Vent I’d like to talk about emotional business practice. This is a subject in my network of colleagues that unfortunately has become more popular in the recent months.To determine your action by emotion rather than reason will derail you in seconds away from what you should be focused on. When you run your own business or even work for another company as an Independent Contractor your daily activities should square up your pay or rather what you do and how you conduct yourself will determine your paycheck.I network among very bright individuals in the same field; network marketing. I’ve seen an emotional environment filled with negativity that I’m sure has placed us all back a few steps.We are being sized up by the public eye and whether we like to admit this or not, we make an assessment of one another all the time. Now I’m not suggesting we cannot “tell it like it is!” But in a public environment we should use discretion and if not for anyone else at least for our own sake. Yes, we have the freedom to act or judge on our own, but we should be doing this wisely and objectively.We as human’s are emotional creatures. I’ve stated this before. I’ve also made note that network marketing is almost like a religion to some of us. It becomes a huge part of our daily lives. So it’s no wonder that when we feel we must protect or defend that emotions will fly and sometimes right off the handle and especially when in an arena of others equally feeling anxious to challenge criticism.No matter what happens to us individually or the companies we work for we must remind ourselves that in this public event we need to be mindful of others and ourselves.
